Why did Jesus say;-" In my Father's house are many mansions"? John ? 14;2?

Keep in mind what Jesus usually referred to in other parts of the New Testament. His Father's house had become a den of thieves John 2;16. He was found at 12 years of age in his Father's house Luke 2 ; 49. Where is the Father's house today and where are these mansions?

Update:

Stephalicious- I think there is a lot of guessing and imagination in your answer. There is a biblical connection to the Temple of Jesus' time. It had side rooms where the priests slept when on temple duty.

My Father's house definitely had an earthly rather than the heavenly context which many Christians have been persuaded of for too long. God's abiding place is with the faithful in whatever place they meet to read His inspired word, break bread and drink wine in memory of His son Jesus Christ. The mansions are the dwelling places in the ecclesias/churches which open their doors to the faithful believers.

Way back in the time of King David, who was loved of God, there has been the tabernacle, then later the Temple which his son built. Jesus later spoke of God's house being made 'a den of thieves'. We must ensure that whatever place we choose to serve God in it will be kept separate from the bad influences of the world and we must remember that we owe our thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God for his tremendous sacrifice on our behalf.

It had become a place of trade like a common market but worse. Exorbitant prices for sacrificial animals, money changers charging high exchange rates and the priests getting their cut, the noise, the rabble, it was all about money.

The Temple was a pattern of the Heavenly, and should have been reverenced as such, it's services pointed to Christs sacrifice but the people had turned it into a "house of thieves".

the quote in Luke 2 and John 2 refer to the temple of Jerusalem, (of which only the wailing wall survives). So in Luke 2, Jesus had been taken to Jerusalem to celebrate a festival with His parents. He got separated and started preaching in the Temple, which was where Joseph and Mary found Him. In John 2 it refers to when Jesus went to the temple courtyard and found money changers and market sellers in that Holy place.

The quote in John 14.2 refers to heaven - Jesus is telling His disciples of His imminent departure into heaven.

this would be a case the place English in the time of the King James translation has replaced. In 1611, the word "mansion" meant a place to sleep for the evening--a combating place or resting place. Now the word has come to advise a huge palatial homestead! The word for homestead in "my father's homestead" is oikia, that can advise homestead, residing, companion and young ones. So we would translate, "In my father's companion and young ones, there are a number of places to chill out."

His old man probably owned an apartment complex. Hang on. The "den of thieves" is a new clue. It was the White House, or the Knesset! Holy crap, that was easy. Next question.

The "houses" are the 12 constellations/houses of the Zodiac. Like some parts will say things like... "a man will enter the house bringing a pitcher of water" well this represents Aquarius... the man with the jug of water. The bible is about 50% astrology/ancient astronomy, and 50% shamanism. It's not impossible to figure out if you have half a brain.

um i dont know if this is a joke or not but i THINK the quote means. "father's house" (to me) is another word for heaven. where else would god live? definitely not under a rock. TO ME, heaven is huge! there's no boundaries (location wise) so with that being said, heaven is big enough to have mansions. TO ME, mansions are symbolic for comfort and a form of paradise. so i guess it means is 'there is paradise in heaven' i dont know, im guessing.

Kate you already have 1 plausible answer.

When we die we begins a new life in our next dimension, heaven, in which we are promised is peaceful and progressive in the sciptures.

Our earthly experiences are gradually taken from us and we begin to go though various adjustments.

Ultimately we will be returned to a new life in the form of a new spirit, with all our passed knowledge expunged. That is reincarnation.

And you need to keep in mind that the version that says "Mansions" is a translation from some other language, and may not have been correct. It may mean, in broad terms that heaven is tolerant of many people.

Understand the context first. Isaiah tells us to decipher the bible "line upon line, precept upon precept."

In other words, go read John 13:1-38 and THEN read John 14:1-2 and your question will be answered. Simple concept, really.
