every nation has a different way of choosing leaders. and today many have elections rather than using traditional methods that worked for thousands of years.
traditionally my nation has leaders chosen by the women. we watch the children as they grow up and can see which ones are leaders, then they are taught many things so that one day, if they have proven themselves to be servants of the people, they will be chosen by the women to represent the people.
if at any time they change and prove themselves to not be faithful servants of the people, they are removed by the women as well and another is chosen in his place.

Now adays tribal chiefs / presidents are elected in thw way that canada and the usa say they are to be elected, although there are communities who also have traditional chiefs chosen in the way thier Nation always choose chiefs. Not all Nations had one chief that decided how a communitie would function. My people were advised by a council of Elders and chiefs (yes plural, more then one) were chosen on thier merits and general based on an area they excelled in. In reality people tend not to be great at everything (especially those that think they are). So we had a variety of leaders to put thier minds together. If they worked for the good of the people we followed, if they stopped doing so, we didn't follow. It worked. I think it is hard for non-Natives to picture such a style of governing for it places responsibility on each individual.

What a great poem. If you don't write all these wonderful jokes and poems, then where do you find them all? They are all really original and very good. Yes it is sad to know that we white people just decided that we were best and totally ransacked other countries without a thought of the native landkeepers. We should all as human beings learn from these events, because we are still doing it today in other parts of the world. In the news yesterday about the tribe found in the Amazon who have never been seen before. What right does anyone else have to go and seek them out? They are living there as they have for centuries and they should be left alone. Lets face it, it must be quite good not to know of what the rest of the world is doing to itself!

Our chief is a member of our tribe, a lawyer and a business man.We have a constitution and he guides his action by this document. He is elected in a regular election from a slate of candidates, usually supervised by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to insure there is no hanky panky, We hardly ever change chiefs unless the old one dies or goes to jail for messing with the tribal funds. We have a tribal council who helps supervise separate areas of the" reservation."

Different Tribes have different traditions. Some inherit it through a paternal lineage. Some inherit the title through their mothers side. Others are chosen by the council. These days most are elected by the people of that Tribe.

Bloodlines, a father passes it to his son, there is no "process". We have governments now, not Chiefs, my Tribe is ran by the Tribal President, much like the president of the US, and governed by the Tribal Council.

Depends on the tribe or nation. Some use elections and other use the CLAM system. The CLAM system gives all the people a voice. It is not handed down father to son has many people think. The chief must know many things before he can become a chief. For one he must speak the language, he must know and live the culture. He must take his leadership and respect from the people
