Archocentrus nigrofasciatus
The Convict Cichlid
is actually a central american cichlid, its a is substrate-spawning cichlid native to Lake Atitlan and Lake Amatitlan in Guatemala south to Panama in Central America. This fish was first typed by Günther in 1867.
Source(s): males get to about 6 inches, females a tad bit smaller, are notrorious for regular spawning, a very fiesty fish, can and will fight, tank mates should be chosen wisely, ive housed them with other oscars, red devils, red points. all about the same size in an 120 gallon tall tank - Anonymous1 decade ago
Convict cichlids can be considered as "dwarf" cichlids, but they're South American cichlids. I'm unsure as to what "asst" is.

It's Central American and you are right. African species prefer a much harder water while Central and S. American want a soft water. While you can raise Central and S. American fish in hard water (mine is 8.1) especially convicts, it is not their best environment. Shortens their lives and the chances of breeding to a normal size is small.

I have no idea what assorted means. Probably a long forgotten government experiment that went south. I'm not gonna get involved.
Dwarf cichilds grow to a max of 3.5in. Convicts grow to 6in. So they reside in the middle class.
