Should I have the hard drive erased?

I am sending back a failed hardrive from a dell laptop and it more than likely has personal data on it.

Should I send it back as is and trust that dell will scrub the hard drive or should I try to erase it somehow. If so how?

How would you erase the data in your hardrive if it's faulty? More likely Dell WILL erase your data when you send it back.

what dell will do is send it back to the maker [as dell dont make there own hardware ] they have 5 diff companys that make there hardware and they will take it apart and replace the parts inside and recycle that old parts im a on site tech for Dell gateway HP and the other compter makers

when i send back a faulty drive, i always delete the contents (unless it's a primary drive) and use file shredder (just google it) to wipe the free space, no telling what will happen to the drive if it is replaced, they usually refurbish bad drives, and erase them, but better to be sure yourself.
