A holiday of 5 days and 4 nights is not enough time to see Bangkok and Pattaya. After paying for the plane tickets a few more nights in a hotel is not that much more of an expense.
Although the weather may be a little hot it is manageable. You drink more fluids, seek out some A/C every now and then, dress accordingly, walk on the shady side of the street, etc.

For Bangkok you can find nightlife in the Patpong area, also a night market. Nightlife is on Sukhumvit Road too.
Get a hotel near the Skytrain route and you can use that overhead rail service. My advice is choose a hotel in the Siam or Sukhumvit Road area so you can walk to many places.

Pattaya is a 2 hour ride away from Bangkok by bus or taxi. Choose a hotel that is near Beach Road or Pattaya 2nd Road (Pattaya Sai Song.) This way you will be able to walk to many places or take the cheap 10 baht baht buses (pick-up trucks with seats.) Nightlife is all up and down Beach Road and Pattaya 2nd Road from the Dolphin statue to Walking Street.

For tours you can get them through travel agencies. There are lots of travel agencies in Bangkok and Pattaya. BUT - a 5 day holiday is a little short!
This TripAdvisor travel forum has lots of good hints on Bangkok and Pattaya. Right hand side "Top Questions" will explain currency, taxi service from airport, taxi within Bangkok and a separate section for Pattaya. Wait until you get to Bangkok to change any money over to Thai baht for the best rate. There is a money changer at the airport 24 hours a day. Lots of bank money changers available all over the major cities.

If you have the time try to visit the Bumrungrad Hospital it is off of Sukhumvit Road, Soi 3.

A good site to use is sawasdee.com and give a lot of information on bangkok and pattaya and other destinations.
You are only there for a short time so i suggest you go to Pattaya first. I always use belltravelservice.com from BKK to Pattaya - they take you by coach to pattaya Bus Station then transfer you to your hotel in minibus. A good place to stay would be in the Jomtein Beach Area for family - the main beach in central Pattaya is just a thin strip.
good sites for hotels use agoda.com, laterooms.com, momondo.com.
Get belltravelservice back to bangkok bus terminal and try to stay near Siam Square and close to skytrain. There is so much to see and do in such a short time I suggest you also find some time to relax.
exchange your cash in Thailand for better exchange rate. Each time you use ATM you will be charged 150 baht so it would be best if you withdraw max amount 20000 baht .
Have a wonderful time in The Land of Smiles

The weather will be very hot in April. If you're in Thailand from the 13-17th, I did want to advise you will be in Thailand during Songkran (Thai New Year) & things will be quite crazy throughout the country.
Nightlife in Bangkok: Tons of options around Sukhumvit and Silom.
Nightlife in Pattaya: A great deal is done around Walking Street.
Sightseeing in Bangkok: Grand Palace, Wat Po and Wat Arun are all great.
Currency exchange:
Won't be a problem at all (don't exchange at the hotels, however, because their rates are silly). The Thai Baht is ranging from 32-33 baht to 1 USD right now (you will get slightly better exchange rates if you bring traveller's cheques).
Guides and sightseeing tips for Bangkok and Pattaya are also included in the links below.

Bangkok is a fantastic place to visit. I recommend the Joe Louis Theatre puppet theatre These puppet are extraudinary right down to the tiniest movement of wrist. Each 'Hun Lakhon Lek' puppet is manipulated by three people who have one hand lightly touching the next person so that they can stay together while manipulating the puppet with their other hand. They are trained in Khon dancing and their feet and bodies move in the dance as they manipulate the puppet with their other hand. On arriving at the theatre patrons are greeted by the puppetmasters themselves who stand in the foyer with their small charges. The puppets wei, or shake hands with you and photos can be taken with them. If you arrive early there is a documentary about the revival of this art form before everyone stands for the national anthem and the puppet show begins. The performance i saw was, 'The Myth of Rahoo and the Lunar Eclipse.' At perfomance end of these traditional plays, the puppeteers and puppets come down from the stage to move amongst the theatre patrons for a very personal comical interaction with members of the audience.

My recommend >> April 12-14 >> Songkran Day
Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins.
Songkran means “movement” or “changing” since according to Thai astrology, the sun will move into a new sign of the Zodiac on this day. Songkran is also called the “Water Festival”. Water is believed to flow and wash away all bad omens during this time. Thus, it is a time for cleaning; houses, villages, temples and spirit houses.
In the Thai tradition, the New Year begins early in the morning when faithful Thai Buddhists give alms to Buddhist monks. After that, they release caged animals, especially birds and fish. Elders and parents will be visited and respected by their children and grandchildren. The young pour scented water over their elder’s hands, they in return, wish them good health, happiness and prosperity. This tradition of paying respect, is called “Rod Nam Dam Hua”. April 14 is called “Family Day”.

Amazing Thailand !!! (^_^)

Hi Doc - That is the end of hot season here, so keep the fluids flowing. Both Pattaya & Bkk cater to tourists and they will have many brochures probably right in your hotel for you to choose activities from - if not both places are loaded with travel agents and you and your family can decide together what trips to take - You are not allowing for alot of time -
