i have had an Awful sore throat for about a week, but no fever.... what could this be?

It started pretty gradually, but now it is to the point where I think twice about swallowing. I do have a minor head ache, but no other symptoms.

What could this be?

Are there any remedies besides waiting it out?

Thanks a lot.

if there is fever than it may not be an infection that needs antibiotics, but to be precautious: .

    . . if this happens:

is it really hard to swallow? like way to painful you wanna cry? and you get a sickening feeling? Look in your mouth in a mirror and look to see if your tonsils look normal. Then feel you glands on your neck below the jaw. If they are swollen, you may more than likely have an infection. One of the best ways to tell if you have Strep throat is to check if you have a fever, see how high it is, take Advil or Tylenol, and check back a few hours later. If the fever still persists then it may be Strep throat. Try to drink water ( I know its painful)!

Usually when someone has an infection, a fever comes along with it. And when you go to the doctor, they will confirm it by giving you a Throat Culture ( stick cotton swab in back of throat, make u gag :( )

Hope you feel better and hope this helps!

Usually when all you have is a sore throat it means you are catching a cold. but try gargling warm salt water, and make the water go as far back as you go without swallowing. Also ( its not pleasant) but you can fill up a cup with half water, and half Hydrogen Peroxide, and gargle that too. You could also gargle Listerine.

Hope u feel better and hope this helps!

When the glands in your throat swell, it's usually a sign of some kind of infection going on in your body. It can be caused by sinus problems (drainage, hay fever etc) therefore you don't feel sick, like you would if you had a head cold. When I was a kid, I used to get "tonsilitis" alot because I was a nail biter. Turns out I was putting all kinds of yucky germs in to my body everytime I stuck my fingers into my mouth. The lymph system in my body recognized new germs and began to overreact, causing my glands to swell in an effort to combat the invading germs. This is common especially with anyone who still has their tonsils, which is why so many doctors rush to take tonsils out but really it's better if you just stop biting your nails or at least become religious about washing your hands first. Try gargling with warm salt water, it may help.

Could be tonsilitis or even strep throat. Strep throat often has a fever but not necessarily.
