What's wrong with my daughter?
My daughter's teacher has told me that whenever she asks her question, she freezes up. She's been at school with the the same teachers since September so it's not like she's nervous about being with new people. She's in K1 The teachers say that she won't follow directions, not because she's misbehaved, but because she looks confused. They say she's smart, but she's just not able to comprehend things correctly. What should I do? What seems to be the matter with her? I've already looked for behavior disorders and she doesn't seem to fit.

What the teachers are hinting at are not behavioral disorders... they are processing disorders. It sounds like an auditory processing disorder (she hears information, but has problems immediately understanding what is being asked of her and responding). Talk to your pediatrician and ask for a referral to a pediatric neuropsychologist. You can get more information on the specialty at www.div40.org (they have a good parent's guide pamphlet). If your insurance won't pay for it, an evaluation, report, and suggestions for follow-up modifications can cost upwards of $4000, so going through the pediatrician or school district are your best options. Please remember that teachers cannot diagnose, but we are really good at working on an IEP and working with doctors and parents to follow specific suggestions to modify the way we teach so that your child can get the most from her education.

Talk to her pediatrician, they can help as well as be able to recommend a specialist (if needed) to talk to you and help you as well.
