Two problems regarding Windows 98 SE......?

Configuration of my PC is -

Processor - Intel P-III

RAM - 256 MB

HDD - 40 GB

Yesterday I installed WIN-98 SE. I am facing two small but irritating problems.

i) When I boot-up my PC and Windows starts, it always asks for password just before the front page appears and I have to press Enter to remove it.

ii) When I shut down Windows the message "It is now safe to switch off computer" does not appear, the screen just goes blank as if computer is hanged.

Kindly suggest some solution for these problems.

    1. The computer WILL ask for the password when you login, even when you don't have a password. That cannot be removed in Windows 98SE.

    2. Your computer must be using an ATX chassis or a newer SMPS, so it shuts down automatically.

My Advice: From your question, I can understand that you've been using XP and you are new to 98SE. If you feel that XP is slow on your machine, try Windows 2000 Professional with SP3, It's almost like XP.

    i) If you want to remove the password, I think you need to change your settings in the control panel -> user accounts. Sorry I cannot give you exact directions as I haven't used windows 98 in a long long time.

ii) This is not a problem, I believe that message used to appear in older versions of windows. All the newer versions just turn off the computer meaning you don't have to do anything after hitting shut down.

98 is next to useless if you intend to go online with it. The latest flash and java are not supported, nor are the latest browsers or security software usually.

If you must stick to Windows - Win 2000 would be better suited to a PC of that age

Otherwise try a lighter version of Linux - not the over hyped Ubuntu or it's many clones though, they will struggle with 256 MB RAM. Something like Puppy, Slax or TinyMe

I comprehend you're asking approximately WIN98 no longer XP. I truthfully have homestead windows ninety 8 too. and prefer it far greater valuable then XP. anyhow. in case you put in the disks and that they do no longer paintings... all i'm able to propose is to open it up in 'My workstation' on the rigidity you place the disk in. If this do no longer help.. you may call a working laptop or workstation tech and get loose help on the telephone. additionally attempt downloading greater moderen drivers from on the cyber web from the corporation your card is from, besides by using fact the ethernet drivers.

My memory is a little rusty here so I'll answer it as best I can

    i) This password dialogue appears if Windows was setup to run in a network environment, i.e; you actually stated that a network existed

ii) You may have to check your PC's BIOS and enable ACPI if such a thing exists or do this:
