If you do, why do you refer to God as "He" or "She"?

Why, even in the Bible's old testament, is God referred to as "He"? How can a solitary, transcendental, omnipotent,, omnipresent apparently bodiless being- especially in the case of the Holy Spirit- have any gender at all? How do we know that He is a He?

In the case of Jesus, who existed as a he in human form, why would that mean Jesus male? If Jesus cannot be called human or mortal, than why would Jesus be defined by those temporary trappings of mortality?

Why is Allah considered male?

Alternatively, if you refer to your Goddess as "She", the same would apply: why?

The true God, the Creator of the glorious heavenly bodies, has glory and brilliance beyond the ability of fleshly sight to endure, for “no man may see [God] and yet live.” (Ex 33:20) Only the angels, spirit creatures, have vision that can behold his face in a literal sense. (Mt 18:10; Lu 1:19) Nevertheless, he does not expose men to such an experience. In loving-kindness he enables men to see his fine qualities through his Word, including the revelation of himself by means of his Son, Christ Jesus.—Mt 11:27; Joh 1:18; 14:9.

God gives us an idea of the effect of his presence in the book of Revelation. The apostle John had a vision that approximated seeing God, in the sense that it revealed the effect of beholding him on his throne. God was not like a man in appearance, for he has not revealed any figure of his to man, as John himself said later: “No man has seen God at any time.” (Joh 1:18) Rather, God was shown to be like highly polished gems, precious, glowing, beautiful, that attract the eye and win delighted admiration. He was “in appearance, like a jasper stone and a precious red-colored stone, and round about the throne there [was] a rainbow like an emerald in appearance.” (Re 4:3) Thus, he is lovely in appearance and pleasant to look at, causing one to lose oneself in wonderment. About his throne there is further glory and an atmosphere of calmness, serenity; the appearance of a perfect rainbow of emerald indicates that, reminding one of the enjoyable quieting calm that follows a storm.—Compare Ge 9:12-16.

I think that God is neither, however, He makes it quite clear that He is the heavenly father. It helps to think of things in a way that make sense to us, but I don't think that He could be confined to male or female. He is God!

There are a great many things in God that we can find out through the scriptures and we who try to be Christlike will reflect His characteristics, both male and female, some better than others.

Honestly, I think it doesn't matter much in the long run, but that it how it is done in the Bible and the relationship is set up in that way. In English we don't really have the option of using a neuter unless we can call Him "It" but that makes it very impersonal, which is not really what He's all about. If you don't like the way it's done you don't have to call Him a Him, but it might get tricky when you start reading the Bible.

Obviously, Jesus while He was on earth was a male, but it doesn't necessarily imply that He is male in heaven... However the language in the Bible talks about Him being God's son. It's just how God chose to communicate it and doesn't necessarily imply that one is better--not in the slightest.

It is ultimately how we think I BELIEVE and not God that instructed us that He is male at all. Point is the human race do normally take heed more of male than female and in the times of Jesus woman was in no authority place at all. Today woman are still opressed by the World and seen as less than men. So maybe for authority sake we would think He not She. God is a God of order and authority . Also loving like a woman mostly are and yes God and The Holy Spirit does not come as a certain sex although we might want to say The Holy Spirit is female cause its a soft tender Spirit that does not force anyone but is persistand like us woman mostly are!

There is no particular preference that is right or wrong. It depends on the experiences a person has in life, practices in the house hold and how his life has been shaped.

A child grows up believing in everything that a parent says is right. If that belief is influenced by mother and she is benevolent, nice and does all things that child needs - it is logical that he would like to see god as a female.

When the bible was written at that time the prevalent practice was male driven society. Thus the author may have seen him as a male.

If the household is not strong, it depends on who the child has the luck to befriend. That can drives ones opinion as well.

As far as me, I pray to both forms. I believe a from is only one aspect of god and god himself is formless. He is like energy that nourishes everything in the universe.

This is a great question! Yes, indeed, a human being can be he or she but a spirit, no, I feel it has no sex. I do, myself feel that there is a God and Goddess and the female and male aspect of the two helps me as an individual relate to my Higher Power. I feel that there are many answers for this question from different religious and belief systems. I grew up a Catholic and was raised with the picture of Jesus Christ as portrayed in the form of a man or male, with his mother being Mary or the Madonna. I feel man is the one that saw "him" and "her" as just that, female and male, if that makes sense, it is hard to put my thoughts into words, my apologies. I feel it is easier for people to relate to "like" God/dess in their lives for it is "comfortable" for lack of better term....

It is true that in the Bible masculine pronouns are used for God. God is everywhere present in His total being all the time.He is Spirit and beyonsd our understanding. The Lord Jesus was God incarnated.God became man. Jesus was as much of a man as any man except He did not sin.

Do not ask us for an explanation .Ask God.

Misogynistic men wrote the bible and they did not want to recognize the power of women, so they created their god as a male. Since no gods actually exist (or ever existed) it doesn't matter what gender one ascribes to it.

Allah Almighty chose this name because

    1. It does not have a plural ( cant make it plural like gods, etc)

    2. It does not have male-famale to it

Allah Almighty is considered "male" because we can not understand anything beyond that ( cant make it goddess )

    hope it helps

I refer to the deity as "He" just out of normal convention, just as I call Jack Frost a "He" or Mother Nature a "She".
