I would not worry about it until she is age 3. Thumb sucking can be comforting and soothing but when she reaches the age of 3, I would get her a "Thumbuddy To Love"- a great product that helps kids stop thumb sucking in a fun and positive way. you can get it on their web site or on Amazon...After age 3 is when thumb sucking can push the teeth forward so you definetly want to break the habit then...

My first son is now 14, he sucked his thumb til he was 7 or 8 (he stopped while he was at school from 6 but did it at home). His teeth have grown ok and he hasnt needed any form of interference from the dentist. I was told when he was about 4 or 5 that his thumb sucking was reshaping his mouth and he would need a brace. He has lovely teeth and no speech problems or any of the things I was told. My youngest is a thumb sucker too - I wont listen, she knows best why she sucks it and will stop when she no longer needs it. My middle child has never sucked his thumb but has had no end of problems with his teeth.

Most children stop sucking their thumbs on their own sometime between ages 3 and 6.

Children who suck their thumbs may need treatment when they:

Also pull their hair, especially when they are between 12 months and 24 months of age.

Continue to suck a thumb often or with great intensity after the age of 4 or 5.

Ask for help to stop the behavior.

Develop dental or speech problems as a result of the behavior.

Feel embarrassed or are ridiculed by other people because of the behavior.

    These are ways to help:

Behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy helps a child avoid thumb-sucking through various techniques, such as substituting tapping fingers together quietly. Behavioral therapy works best if all people involved in the child's care follow the treatment plan.

Thumb devices. Thumb devices, such as a thumb post, can be used for children with severe thumb-sucking problems. A thumb device is usually made of nontoxic plastic and is worn over the child's thumb. It is held in place with straps that go around the wrist. A thumb device prevents a child from being able to suck his or her thumb and is worn all day. It is removed after the child has gone 24 hours without trying to suck a thumb. The device is put back if the child starts to suck his or her thumb again. Thumb devices need to be fitted by a doctor.

Oral devices. Oral devices (such as a palatal arch or crib that fits into the roof of the mouth) interfere with the pleasure a child gets from thumb-sucking. It may take several months for the child to stop sucking the thumb (or fingers) when these devices are used. When the child stops sucking, parents may choose to continue using the device for several months. This may prevent the child from starting the habit again. Oral devices need to be fitted by a dentist.

Do one thing always make her hand busy, like give her something to hold,to play just make her hand very busy so that she doesn't gets a single moment to suck her thumb, don't show her the bad effects of sucking thumb now only she is small at least let her be 3 then u can tell her BEST OF LUCK.

There is a great product you should get. It is called "Thumbuddy To Love" and you can get it on Amazon or on thier web site. It teaches kids in a positive way without shaming them to stop thumb sucking and it comes with a book, thumb puppet and sucess chart. Kids love it and it really works!

Let your child know that continuing will cause problems with how his or her teeth grow.

    * Use a mirror to show your child the changes happening to his or her teeth or mouth shape.

    * Talk about the unhealthy germs that are on our hands and how the child puts the germs in his or her mouth by thumb-sucking.

    * Talk to your child about becoming a "big boy" or "big girl" by stopping thumb-sucking. Remind your child that he or she may be teased for continuing thumb-sucking.
