The fact that fruit trees were taxed in Palestine during that time and that unproductive trees were cut down helps us to understand why Jesus caused an unfruitful fig tree to wither so as to use it for illustrative purposes.

The nation of Israel, like this fig tree, has a deceptive appearance. Although the nation is in a covenant relationship with God and may outwardly appear to observe his regulations, it has proved to be without faith, barren of good fruitage. Because of lack of faith, it is even in the process of rejecting God’s own Son! Hence, by causing the unproductive fig tree to wither, Jesus is graphically demonstrating what the end result will be for this fruitless, faithless nation.

The withering of the fig tree has reference to the parable of the fig tree in the book of Jeremiah.

This is The Key of David.

The fig tree did not give its fruit at the correct season therefor Christ wither it...

In other words, the fig tree that Christ withered represents the antichrist in the end times which will lie with promises and salvation and will not produce fruits.

"Mar 13:28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:"

In this verse the fig tree has tender branches representing the time for Christ's return is near.

"Mar 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not [yet]"

    The withered fig tree:

In this verse the the fig tree is full blown with leaves and should have figs on it but did not. In other words, this fig tree represents the antichrist's untimely, off season lies of salvation.

    Jesus Christ said:

"Mat 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:"

In other words, pray that our belief of Christ's return is not off season.

I believe it is an analogy that compares Christians to the fig tree. Jesus wanted His followers to go out and bring more people to the faith. Those that did were fruit bearing. Those that did not were considered fruitless and stood the chance of being cut down. The withering I believe is an analogy comparing fruitless Christian life to slowly falling away from the faith.

Of all Jesus' teachings, i've got observed that this one is the main misunderstood. with a view to realize it, you may desire to understand appropriate to the fruiting cycle of the Sycamore Fig tree, that's the form of fig Jesus cursed. remember, this tale handed off basically previous to Passover. presently before that factor of the year rolls around interior the middle East, the Sycamore Fig places out leaves and small, fit to be eaten fruit-like knobs that at the instant are not actual figs. many times, the undesirable and travellers might %. and eat those "pre-figs;" in reality, they're nonetheless eaten right this moment. Later, the better ones that we expect of of as figs emerge from a distinctive component to the tree. yet right here is the clincher: if a Sycamore Fig does not have those "pre-figs" alongside with the 1st leaves, then it won't produce ANY actual figs later interior the season. consequently, the tree is not any sturdy, because of the fact it produces no fruit. And a tree that produces no fruit is basically sturdy for burning. whilst Jesus cursed the fig tree, He became demonstrating an unstated parable to the Jewish people who have been rejecting Him. The fig tree is an historical image of the land of Israel, and consequently the Jewish people. yet whilst their Messiah recognized, the country as an entire lacked the end results of repentance (Matthew 3:8) -- the "pre-figs" -- and so as that they rejected Him. (it somewhat is why Jesus later pronounced at Matt. 21:40 3 that "consequently I say to you, the dominion of God would be taken from you and given to a usa bearing the end results of it" -- which ability the Gentiles, who might undergo the fruit of repentance and faith contained in the direction of the tip of the Church Age.) So, by cursing the tree, Jesus became symbolically condemning the Jewish people because of the fact of their loss of repentance for his or her sins, which could have cause them to joyfully settle for Him as Messiah -- producing the "later figs," or actual fruit of religion. yet it somewhat is to not say that God will constantly conceal His face from the Jewish people, as He did whilst they rejected Him (Isaiah fifty 9:2; Ezekiel 39:23, 24 & 29; & Micah 3:4). interior the destiny, basically previous to the beginning up of the Tribulation, there'll initiate an magnificent national, non secular regeneration of the Jewish people, and God will returned call them His people.

When a fruit tree is not bearing fruit the owners usually uproot it or cut it down.

But Jesus dealt with it on a faith level. And told his disciples to do likewise concerning situations that are not going right but should.

I think he was teaching that his followers, once they have been enabled to do good works, should do them. Otherwise, on judgement day, they will be judged harshly for hording the gifts they had been given.
