Do your children have regular spelling tests?

If so, what grade are they in (and have they had them in previous grades)?

Finally, do you know whether spelling is an official part of your district's curriculum? Or, do the teachers just do it on their own, outside of the required curriculum?

Well, I'm only 15 and without kids, but I can offer an answer.

When I was in grades 1-6, I had a spelling test every Friday. Throughout the week we always did different activities with the words we would be tested on that week.

I think it was part if the curriculum, because every teacher did it, and we had regular text books.

My son is in grade one and they have a test every Friday. The teacher provides them with 5 words (word wall) every Monday so they can practice throughout the week.

It is mainly word recognition so that by the time the end of year comes, they'll be able to spell over 500 words. It is part of the curriculum. I don't think teachers have much freedom in what they are supposed to be teaching anymore. Their style may be different but the topics and testing papers are pretty much the same all around.

i had weekly spelling tests until i was in 6 grade i think. now im in 9th grade an i have a weekly vocab test which includes a 10 question spelling test. the spelling words we have are from some list of the tops words misspelled by highschoolers or something and it is very sad that we have some of these words at our age. like, this week some of our words are 'busy', 'where', color'. so ya, its very easy lol. i think they have us do these spelling words because we have known them for so long and some people just get lazy and don't give a crap so their trying to burn it into our brains again lol. but yes, i had regular spelling tests pretty much throughout my entire school career, except a couple grades here and there specifiacally 7th and 8th. i don't know if it's part of the curriculum but i think it is.

every friday. they get their words on monday and use those all week long in practices and then on fri they have a test. Hes in first grade. I dont remember him having official spelling tests in K, maybe they had some but i dont recall.

its part of the curriculum, the words arent set though. they have ( teachers) a book with words for different level students, from level a to e, a being the easiest. So they see what level the kids are in their spelling and give them words accordingly, so like in his class they have different kids with different levels so the kids have different words for the week. seems to work for them.

since they have kids who are more advanced in reading, they get harder words and those just getting a hang of reading independently get words matched with their level, that way no ones too bored or overly frustrated with their spelling words
