If a one year old dog is used to his name, how could I change it without making him confused?

He is a one year old chihuahua/min pinn mix, his name is Tank and he is blonde. He is lively and sweet. I want to change his name...but I have heard that you should keep the new name sounding as close to the old name as possible. But I really don't like Hank or anything that sounds similar. Can anyone give me any suggestions.

Update:

I just got this dog yesterday...they were abusive and I just want a new life for him and with that comes a new name too...

Go ahead and change it to whatever you want. I've had to change many foster dogs' names because they came to associate it with misbehaviour, or because I simply didn't like it. Just use the new name, and he'll learn soon enough.

I had a dog that went from Eddie to Classic.

Don't change the name, You cant change your child's name when you go of the name and change your mind about it. A name if for life, and once a dog has a name you should not change it.... well that's how i see it any way. It will also save you the time and confusion. Just leave it as Tank... i think thats a lovely name.

You should focus more on training.

Obedience training would have prevented many of these problems and can help solve the bad behaviors that exist. Many people think that obedience training is something that is done to a dog to make it perform some artificial activity on command. But if we turn the words around, we'll be closer to a real definition: Obedience training is to train dogs to be obedient, to obey anything and everything they're told to do. It covers a wide range of lessons a dog can learn, including tricks, family manners, show ring exercises, and skills demonstrations. Sniffing dogs, service dogs for handicapped owners, search and rescue dogs, sled and carting dogs, hunting dogs -- all carry their obedience training to the highest degree. They have been trained to obey an unusual set of commands that increase their value as helpers to man.

  • I think if you really wanted to change his name, you could probably just pick out a new name and use ONLY that name for a while. He will catch on eventually. I used to call my dog Goofball all the time as a nickname (lol) and I could actually just be talking about her and say 'the Goofball' or something and she would look over like 'what ?'.

    Good luck (:

  • I think the name is cute, but if you want to change it, it won't hurt him. Call him by both for a while and then just stop using the old name altogether. Dogs don't care what their name is. I've adopted dogs and changed their names each time. They learn faster than you think! Just be patient with him and he will get it.

Every dog needs some type of training. The first class I ever took a dog to was https://tr.im/PKJFB

It's a very basic kind of class. They will help you with your dog, and show you how to work with your dog at home.

They'll also answer any questions you have about your dog's particular problems and how to handle them. The most important thing in dog training is to be consistent and work with your dog at home on the lessons. The PetSmart class teaches sit, down, come, and the very basics every dog needs to know. They will also help socialize your dog. You are unhappy with an untrained dog, and believe it or not, the dog is actually unhappy to. You need to take your dog now, as the older he gets, the harder it will be to correct your dog's bad habits. Plus the classes are fun for you and your dog. My dog went from that first PetSmart class on to advanced obedience classes. You might also contact your local humane society. The one in my area offers obedience classes with a very good trainer at a reduced price.

If you absolutely set on changing his name, I recommend that you teach him his new name by saying his old name then follow it with his new name, like "Tank Joe" for example. He will then associate his new name with his old name and will learn to respond to it just as his old one.

It may take a while though so don't expect it too happen to soon. But give it some time and it is sure to work!!

Why would you change your dog's name? Any name change is going to confuse him for the first little while. Tank is a cute name, if he's used to it you should let it be.

I say don't change the name because the name is really unique. Plus, it sounds really energetic, in my opinion.

If I got a dog which already has a name, I would really want to change it. But I'd always think: How would I feel if someone decided to change my name? So I'd rather not change it if I was you. But, your life. Your decisions.

    Hope I helped :).

It's fairly simple to teach a dog his name, even if he's answered to something else for years. All it takes is a handful of tasty treats and a few minutes of your time.
