Where does the term African American come from?

In my opinion, it is the most retarded, ignorant, stupid term to call someone.

German-American = Immigrant from Germany

Ethiopian-American = Immigrant from Ethiopia

European-American = Immigrant from Europe

African-American = Immigrant from Africa

Not to mention, you have North and South America, and black people in Brazil don't call them selves African-Americans, they call them selves Brazillians.

People are so fed up racist tension, but fail to realize singling someone out like that is more racist then the N word.

What if people changed the name of your race every 10 years like you were an animal?

Update:

To EMW, its white liberal Harvard professors that keep changing the name of the race.

I've never heard a black person say to anything black person "Yo my african american what it do"

I know thats kind of stereotypical, but it's not racist, trust me.

Couldn't agree with you more! Whatever happened to America being a melting-pot of AMERICANS! Let's be united as E Pluribus Unum:

AMERICANS should respect their countrymen as AMERICANS- regardless of heritage or race! End of story.

    Translating E PLURIBUS UNUM

The general meaning of each Latin word is clear:

Pluribus is related to the English word: "plural."

Unum is related to the English word: "unit."

E Pluribus Unum describes an action: Many uniting into one. An accurate translation of the motto is "Out of many, one" – a phrase that elegantly captures the symbolism on the shield in the 1776 Seal of The United States Of America, which uses small shields symbolizing 6 nations and 13 colonies to together form ONE greater shield .

If we are FIRST AMERICANS, we can stand united as a country and countrymen with the same purpose and same equal rights

Our heritage is something of value on a personal level, and special as it is, should be shared with others on a personal level, as opposed to huge impersonal umbrella terms and labels.

I think that calling a black person born in the US African-American, is worse that any racist terminology. I am BLACK, but born in CUBA, and became an American Citizen, now should I let people call me African-Cuban- American? Probably that African-American thing was created to make less valuable a Black American because I have friends that are real African-American, and they are whites. A lot of people forget that in Africa are living millions of whites born there.

African Americans got here up with the time period. I in my view do not brain the time period Black American. I bet "Blacks" on my own used to be too commonplace in view that there are Black folks all over the place the arena, so that they made up our minds to distinguish the exclusive Black agencies. Black American might had been greater than African American, however however Black is a colour, they usually desired the time period to be related to a position. Other ethnic agencies are fortunate to understand EXACTLY in which their from. All Black Americans recognise for essentially the most aspect is America, it is definitely no longer our fault, but it surely nonetheless sucks. Good Luck together with your debate!

It is the people of that race that keep changing what they want to be called, not the rest of us.
