How can I feel more at ease during a phone interview?

I am more of an "in-person" person. I am a lot better at presenting myself at in person interviews where I can use/read body language and eye contact. Plus, I am just a lot more comfortable speaking with someone in person and don't like talking on the phone. I have had a few phone interviews lately that I know would have gone better had they been in person. Does anyone have any tips for doing better on a phone interview?

Be showered and dressed, the same as if you were interviewing in person. Sit at a desk or table with a copy of your resume in front of you.

Sounds like you are more of a visual person than a listener. Be sure to listen carefully to the interviewer. I'm used to constant conference calls, and when I'm listening to the speaker I usually find myself sitting still and staring at a fixed object (usually the phone). Sitting still and focusing might help you concentrate and visualize the speaker.

Also, when you are speaking, go ahead and smile or use your regular body language. They say that doing so can actually translate over the phone.

Try writing out question you think they may ask with your answers, so you can easily refer to this while on the phone. You might even feel more comfortable having a photo or picture on the computer as a stand-in for the interviewer, if it lets you react better and come across more natural on the phone. Try to make the call when you're ready, comfortably seated and free of interruptions.
