Okay, let's try this again....?
Jesus SAID: if you ask ANYTHING in my name it shall be given unto you. Notice the "Anything". I didn't see any fine print or a notice that said that this was subject to terms and conditions of the request. No, I didn't have a prayer go unanswered recently, I'm just curious and confused! What is the point of praying for something if it may or may not happen depending upon whether or not it is God's will?
Before I get another silly "try reading the Bible" comment, I HAVE read the Bible front to back. Raised as a Methodist, but attended a catholic school from Pre-school through 8th grade. I was DEEPLY involved in the church. I took it upon myself to read the Bible from cover to cover a few years back, just because I wanted to. Don't assume I haven't read it because I'm asking a question. I'm confused about my beliefs and quite frankly, the responses from many Christians to this question is NOT helping me in the least bit. The responses seem ignorant and overly judgemental.....

If God knows all things and has a perfect plan, why pray for anything?
i) Doesn't an omniscient God already know of your need?
ii) Isn't that asking God to make the perfect plan imperfect?
iii) If God knows of your need and has decided it is not in keeping with the perfect plan, doesn't that imply you think you know better than God?
Either God ignores you (in which case praying is a waste of time); OR God's plan was actually imperfect before and he was too dumb to realize until you told him; OR God junks his perfect plan to give you what you want (in which case God is screwing someone else over** on your personal wishes, which is a selfish act on your part and an evil act on God's part)
** if god doesn't have to screw someone else over to give you what you want, but gives you what you want when you ask, why didn't he do it your way in the first place, since he already knew you needed it?

Well if you're going to use the bible as a weapon, then use all of it. When Jesus prayed, he always said "whatever your will be done!" he didn't ask for things he wanted.
And there is a lot of fine print. There's a lot of how to pray (ie, you need not be in any bad relationships or needing to forgive anyone, hold grudges, etc)
By the way, the "point in praying for something" is to build a relationship with Jesus, not to get whatever you want.

Well, perhaps all we're to pray is the Lord's Prayer since that is what Christ taught the disciples to pray. Also maybe God's will can change depending upon if what the asker wants fits in with it.

1 John 5:14 (English Standard Version)
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
note...according to his will
James 4 Amplified Bible especially v.3
2You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled; [so] you become murderers. [To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned.] You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain [the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek], so you fight and war. You do not have, because you do not ask. [I John 3:15.]
3[Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures.
Jesus isn't Santa Claus or the magic wish granting genie.
house. A new car. A white-collar job. The newest gadgets. Vacation trips.
Though they all seem great and harmless to have, many people, including Christians, have the intention to seek God only to have these things. This is where the idea of "Genie God" is created by people. Many think that by praying, they will be beneficiaries of God's blessings, according to what they desire. Ask yourself. What do you pray for? "Lord please give me this." "Lord, please give me that. I'll be happy and I'll praise you again." It's funny that people tend to be conditional when it comes to God. But He said in Luke 19:40 (WEB),

11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15“If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Look at the whole concept. This will truly only happen when we are doing what God wills to be done. at least this is what i deduced.

You need to compare scripture with scripture when studying the Bible. Elsewhere it talks about "abiding in Him" being part of getting prayers answered.

Gotta take it in context. personally, I have had The Lord do MANY things for me, and they were personal, like, save my life, and my eldest daughter, turn sour milk sweet, hold up my truck to change a tire by extending the reach of my small bottle jack, supply new customers, and the list goes on. Praise The Almighty!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He wants great things for ALL of us, but ya got to press in read, and study your "human" owners manual; DAILY!! Attempt to live like Jesus, it's not easy, but Praise The Almighty for grace and mercy!!!

sometimes the answer is no and sometimes the answer is yes but not at this time. God does things in his own time, and maybe he doesn't answer our prayers for the best, maybe it won't be helpful to us. Wat we want for ourselves and what God wants for us are 2 different things most of the time.
