Where is the absolute WORST place to stay in Amsterdam?
What hotel/hostel is the absolute worst hole in Amsterdam? Which is a must stay? Please help :)
Well you see, I'm going to the Dam soon and was checking out Tripadvisor for info on places to stay. I came across some pretty nasty places that were advertised as nice establishments but were really just hostels in disguise. I was wondering if someone stayed at a place that was just atrocious and wanted to let me know in case I get 'mislead' into a place that claims to be more than it really is.

i am amsterdam destination expert on tripadvisor..and on the hotel reviews the positives and negatives should be weighed..usually if someone has one bad thing go wrong they will trash the hotel and vent on tripadvisor...those are pretty easy to spot. TA has hotel rankings that are pretty accurate..#1 thru 400 or so..but in general stay away from anything on damrak (except swissotel, they are pretty good)..and do not choose the "dam hotel" on damstraat..voted in top 10 worst hotels in europe by tripadvisor..to the other poster..yes, the kras is still in business..has been since about 1860 or so...its also a 5* and make be out of the OP's budget range.

It's pretty difficult to answer this because of course (a) 'worst' and 'best' are completely subjective and (b) unless you stay in every hotel/hostel then you can't compare anyway
Anyway, what I do when I'm looking at places to stay is to look at sites like Trip Advisor & Hostelworld and there they have a lot of reviews and ratings from people who have stayed there and rate their experience. Due to the volumes of traffic then the inevitable false postive ratings (usually from hotel employees) don't overweigh the results disproportionally (as they might do on a small site with only a few reviews) Here's the link for Hostelworld http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/Amsterdam and for Trip advisor (which is better)
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g188590-Amsterda... - e.g. Hotel Y Boulevard is descriped as a "hellhole" and it's pretty unanimous! http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g188590-d6...
I guess the only advice I would give as a local is to consider what you like & don't like e.g. some hotels facing onto busy street, squares etc can be pretty noisy and this would annoy me (paying for a hotel to sleep in that I couldn't actually get any sleep in!). Also consider looking at hotels a little out of the direct centre if you want a good deal. Hire a bike for the duration (great to have during the day as well) and you can save a bucket on both transport and hotels.

I don't know about hostels but I stayed at a small hotel in the heart of the city and it was decent but I can't remember the name right now. I also stayed at the Hotel Krasnowsky and it was not bad. I don't know if it's still in operation but I would stay there again.
