My fish has ick and it's the first cycle, i cannot keep the carbon filter in?

I have a 10 gal freshwater with a molly, the other had died suddenly the day i got him. this one i've had about a week and a half. he has ick and i've been treating him for about 3 days now with ick gaurd by jungle labs. i've been keeping the temp at about 80 degrees and following directions on the meds to take out the carbon filter while treating and do 50% water changes everyday until ick is gone. my water tests are comming up as normal but there is a bactirial bloom indicating the cycle is starting in the tank (being the first cycle). my problem is that my carbon filter is out because it will take out the medicine. how will this affect the cycle? i would mostly like to just make it through the 'new tank syndrome' but also cure him of ick.

Don't keep the carbon filter in, it will take out the chemical you're treating the ich with.

As far as your medicine, make sure the active ingredient is Malachite Green (I use "Nox-Ich"). That is the BEST medicine to treat it with. Also, a very common cause of ich is adding water that is colder than what's already in the tank. When you do water changes make sure the water is close to the tank's current temp (preferably warmer). Otherwise the medicine isn't going to help. Most fish can live happily in 74-84 degree F water. Don't raise your temp to 90 it's not necessary and could stress and possibly kill your fish.

P.S. As a beginning aquarist I had to deal with ich many times. A chemical free method that I consider to be "gentler" on the fish is the use of IODINE-FREE salt and a slight temperature increase. They sell aquarium salt with info on how much to put per gallon of water. Search the web, you'll find useful info on salt treatment for ich. Also, you mention a "bacterial bloom", if you mean algae bloom and green or brown algae is beginning to appear on the glass of the tank then this indicates your nitrate levels are high which is probably what is stressing the fish.

That Ick Guard stuff has never worked for me. The best treatment is to raise the temperature of the tank. I've gotten my angels into the 89 degree range and they have gotten over the ick with no meds. That way you could have your filter cartridge in the filter and treat the ick.

But the stress of the cycle plus the ick could make for a bad ending. Make sure to do MANY water changes.

you are able to in no way be valuable that Ick is completely long previous. it may desire to continuously injury out back if the fish are under pressure or in case you upload an contaminated fish...etc. yet you are able to do away with 1 outbreak completely with the aid of using medicine for Ick. in my view, i take advantage of PimaFix. you will discover it only approximately everywhere and it truly is a multi treatment. wish that made experience with regard to the Ick coming back after it truly is been cured. Lol.

From my knowledge the only thing the carbon does is remove odors and makes the water clear it shouldn't effect the actual cycle of the bacteria at all.

there is a product called paraguard by seachem. I have used it, it is safe for all filters and works well. The main thing on the cycle is to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down.
