Why would people want to buy healthcare from a private company?

When we buy an item or service, the company that sells it to us wants us to buy it. They make money when we buy it. With healthcare it is different. The head of a healthcare company has one job, to make money. The way to make more money in healthcare is to provide LESS healthcare. So I ask, if you need a service or goods that could save your life, why would you want to get them from a company that will try to find reasons to deny you them because they would prefer to make more money by NOT giving it to you?

You misunderstand market forces -- wildly. Even when I buy health insurance, I don't want to be sick. When I buy car insurance, I don't want to get my car repaired.

Whenever a person spends their own money on a product or a service (insurance is a product) they want the most for the least. This keeps prices in some kind of balance. Companies cannot let their prices run too high or else customers will lose interest in their product. But when someone else is paying for it you only want the most, and costs run crazy. This partially explains why insurance companies are excited about government mandated healthcare -- it will force people to pay for their insurance. But what they don't see is that they will end up losing in the end. But the people who make this deal may be thinking short-term profit, then live abroad. Its the middle and lower classes that will end up holding the bag. The politicians and the heads of companies will be just fine.

If we let government "take care of us" we will get what the government says we can have. Our choices will be severely limited because government can and usually does act like a monopoly. We won’t' have any other real choices. In an effort to hold down the cost of health care you will find shortages, long waits, and boards that will decide if you have lived a long enough live not to need this life-saving procedure.

What do Canadian's with means do when they cannot wait for many months for their urgent medical need: they run to the U.S., that's what.

"We are repeatedly being told that we need to have a government-controlled medical care system, because other countries have it -- as if our policies on something as serious as medical care should be based on the principle of monkey see, monkey do." --economist Thomas Sowell
