Why is It not "cool anymore to be a boy scout?

I'm a scout, and I know it's fun... campouts, hiking, biking, camping, climbing, and all that good stuff. Plus it also teaches you those valuable skills and life lessons you can't get or are very hard to get anywhere else. Everyone thinks it's bad because you're a "goody goody two shoes" and you have to wear a uniform. I know it's more than this, and when I speak up in the scout program's defence, they call it BS and all they think about is the service element.

Update:

And, just to let some people know who don't know... being bossed around by a troop leader is not what scouts is... the boys themselves run the troop. The scoutmasters are there to basically keep things from getting out of hand. It is NOT something any 5 year old could do.

They're jealous because you're learning and doing things they chose not to. From what you say, it's obvious you really enjoy scouting, and as far as you should be concerned, that makes it cool. I'm sure if the other people tried it to, they would agree and think it's cool too.

As a child it seem that the only Scouts I knew were White. So I rationalized that it was a "white thing". Growing up I realized that Doctors, lawyers military leaders were Boy Scouts. Leadership, the belief in a higher power and patriotism is what separates us from being a follower or a leader. Look how our society disrespects our leaders. It's the price they pay for being at the forefront. American society is filled with people that want to be part of the herd. Taking a low profile, flying under the radar as a lifestyle. Stand out and look what happens. Do your thing. Enjoy life's gifts. Strive to be a strong individual. Reap the rewards of your committment.

Let's be honest. It hasn't been cool to be a boy scout for a very, very long time. Probably pretty close to 50 years.

The key reason, in my view, is self-determination. A kid who smokes and drinks and plays guitar in a band is doing what he wants to do. A kid who signs up for a club and has an adult troop leader order him around is doing what someone else wants him to do.

Even though the kid in the band is doing stupid and self-destructive things, kids respect independence and strength more than planning and compliance. It takes a lot of independence and strength to make your own money and live your own life as a teen. Being a boy scout, on the other hand, is something that a 5 year old can do.

I totally agree with what you say, I was in Boy Scouts from age 11 until age 18 and I am anything but a 'goody two shoes' (pothead, atheist, political beliefs bordering on anarchism). But I think the social stigma against the organization is too heavily ingrained in our society to be simply talked away. The best thing you can do is be careful who you tell about it.

...because of a certain reputation, which I will not mention.

I will say, that in the more traditional midwest, being a Boy Scout means... being a Boy Scout.

It depends on where you live.

On the coasts where minorities heavily populate, the only things cool are the things of their culture, and it gets really confusing (and confounding).

I'm a minority, but I was born here. Even I get confused about what is the "cool" thing and what is not.
