Dell Laptop getting online?
I have an older Dell latitude cp laptop that has never been online. I has an old version of windows (98) and an OLD version of IE (5 i think)
I am trying to get a wireless router hooked up to it to get it online but the router says it needs a newer version of IE but i cant get online to download a newer version because i need the router.
Is there anyway around this catch 22?

The tricky thing is that IE6, which was very unpopular, is the "newest" version that lists Windows 98 as a compatible OS. IE7, as far as I know, requires XP SP2. IE6 will likely fail support many modern browser features, though it should be enough to at least put you on the web. Finding a copy off-line might have been easier years ago when it was likely bundled on those magazine CD's. If you ever saved any of those "free CD's" that AOL or otrher ISP's dumped on you you should be able to find a copy. The newest version of firefox does not support Win98 as far as I know.
Getting on-line really shouldn't be a problem, even with an old browser. I hooked up a 1999 powerbook using an ethernet cable - I suggest you try the same.

if you really cannot afford anything newer, then download IE7 or IE8 on another PC, put it on a memory stick and copy it across, then install. BUT..... I am pretty sure you will end up regretting that, cos your old Dell is unlikely to have the oomph to be able to work IE8 properly - I would guess the CPU is relatively slow, and you do not say how much RAM you have - and Win 98 is also VERY vintage! I would say that it is time to move into the 21st century! Sorry!
Oh, and you are likely to have issues with modern USB devices, cos I am pretty sure you only have USB1.0 on there, and everything in the shops now runs on USB2.0 (way faster than USB1.0)

Put the highest version of IE that 98 can use on a flash drive and put it on the computer.
Does that thing even have a Wi-Fi card in it? I highly doubt that.

I would go to the Library or someplace that has internet that you could use and then download Mozilla Firefox, and give it a try. Use a USB flash drive to transfer it to your old computer. Install and forget about Internet Explorer.

Yes your on line with something so DL to that then copy it to the older system (if it can handle it) then there you go
Not sure W98 will handle IE7 or higher so try a different browser
