what do you think of girls skipping school because they're on their period?

One of our [male] teacher gave our mixed-sex class a lecture about missing too much school due to illness, and in future he wants a doctors' note for repeat absences, and he had a list of the worst offenders [all girls- I suspect he didn't guess it was for periods].

Talking about it afterwards, I was horrified when 5 of my good friends admitted to taking "monthly sick leave" from school... that it was so commonplace! 4 days in a row off, once a month, EVERY month! We're 17, and my argument was "How does your Mother/Sister cope with going to work everyday?" along with "How do the female teachers cope? They can't miss an entire week like that?" ...Now we girls are going to get a lecture from a female teacher about it next week...

What do you think? One of the friends has prescription painkillers, so she must have it bad, but she doesn't take them.... Do you think it's ridiculous too, or should girls be entitled to "monthly sick leave"?

Update:

Yes, you need a parents' note for absences, but for repeated absences like that, you'll need a doctor's note too. I think it's a fair policy.

Yeah it does seem like they're missing a lot of school. I personally might miss one day a month when I have my period, if it's really heavy and I have terrible cramps. But you have to remember that some girls have it AWFUL. I have a friend who's had her period since she was 9 or 10 or something and she has it for nearly 2 weeks and she says it's so so heavy. She also gets really painful cramps. In a case like hers, I feel bad for her and think that it's fine that she misses a couple of days a month because of it.

Life isn't fair, periods are horrible and I hate them. But skipping all four days? Maybe the first two since those are the worst, but all four shouldn't be acceptable. Maybe girls should get some extra days, I don't see how it could hurt anything, it's just two days every month, and if you make up the work you should be fine right?

I get cramps to the point where I can't walk without hunching over, so I have to take pills, if I don't have those pills, you can guarantee I'm not going to school.

Vomiting, fainting, some have it really bad. I've never missed school because of it, however I did end up missing parts of some classes because I would be in the nurses office on a cot with a heating pad across my abdomen because my cramps hurt so bad.

I think everyone plays the period card at least once.

Plus your male teacher practically has no idea what he's talking about.

Doctors hate that stupid ****. What a waste of their time.

I think it is ridiculous and a pathetic excuse to stay home. Grow up, suck it up, take some advil and get your butt to school. When you grow up and have a job and family you can't just take a 4 day vacation every month cause you have your period!!!

yea that's a little nuts, But if there missing school don't a parent have to write them a note? So whats more nuts is the parent is letting them

WIMPS! I've never missed school for my period, heck, I didn't miss one day of school when I had bronchitis for 3 months!!!!

They just want an excuse to get out of school. Just toughen up and go through it. I for one have NEVER heard of any one doing that out of my friends.

It isn't that hard. If you are in pain, take midol or something, then presto, you are good enough to make it through school.

I think if you feel okay, you should go to school.. only when I feel really sick I stay at home. I don't know about anyone else, but yeah.
