In pregnancy, when to stop sleeping on stomach?

Hi, it's just that i tend to sleep on my front and even if i make a concious effort to go to sleep on my side i often wake up on my front as i have moved in the night. I am four and a half months into my pregnancy now and while i do have a very definite bump (this is my first baby) i am not really uncomfortable on my front.

So is it ok to sleep like that if its not bothering me? Or is it bad for baby? Just wondered what other people knew about this?

Also, any stories on first feeling baby move in pregnancy would be appreciated too! Thanks.

Alas, I am a belly sleeper too. My midwife urged me to train myself to sleep on my side. You should start sleeping on your side very early in pregnancy to get used to it. Also, it isn't good to sleep on your belly during pregnancy because it can cut off some blood flow to your baby. Sleeping on your back isn't good either, as it can also put pressure on veins and arteries and becomes very uncomfortable as your uterus and baby get bigger. The way I trained myself to sleep on my side was with a body pillow. I would lay on my side and wrap my arms and legs around the pillow which helps keep you from rolling over to your belly during sleep. This also helps with back pain and pelvic pain, reducing pressure on your bones and joints. If you still wake up on your belly, don't be discouraged, just get back on your side and pretty soon you will get in the habit. After sleeping like this for a couple weeks, you won't think twice about it and you will also notice less aches, pains, and sore spots! Good luck and best wishes!

I was the same as you, i always used to sleep on my front. Although you have a bump now as the bump gets bigger you will get uncomfortable sleeping on your tummy. You say your moving in the night, your body will wake you up as it gets uncomfy. I was advised to use body pillows to help keep me on my side and I swear by it, best thing I ever brought. I was told if wouldnt harm baby sleeping on my front but it definitely doesnt have any advantages, whereas lying on your left side does.

Im now 35 weeks pregnant, i felt baby move for the first time about 18 weeks. From about 15-16 weeks I was like am I feeling it or am I not but at 18 I got a definate kick.

Your body will let you know when it is uncomfortable. I slept on my stomach through most of my first pregnancy, she sat more towards my back so it never became uncomfortable until late pregnancy. With this pregnancy it finally became uncomfortable at about 28 weeks. I always fall asleep on my left side and still managed to end up on my stomach. As for it hurting the baby, nope, baby is fine. Especially at 15 weeks the baby is still small and is very well protected. It will eventually become uncomfortable and you will stop doing it, try not to worry about it. Good luck!

hiya, when it comes to how you sleep it all depends on what feels comfortable. you will inevitably find that you can't sleep on your front so until that time i see no problem with doing so.

i also like to sleep on my front but can't at the moment. to make do i sleep so that i am half way between being on my front and side by sleeping so that my knee is resting on a pillow which helps take a little pressure of my stomach.

when it comes to feel the baby move, i was about 22 weeks with my first baby before i really felt anything. with this my second pregnancy i was 17 weeks.

those first movements didn't really feel like kicks as such just slight shifting movements.

Ok, Ive just read the comments people have give you, and it is not good actually atall to sleep on your tummy while pregnant, especially when you feel pressure on the 'bump' when lay on it, the reason is, and many women do not know this unless researched, but if you lye on your tummy when pregnant, apparently you have a main artery, that is under alot of pressure when pregnant (especially when the pregnancy progresses), if you lye on this - it is possible to go unconcious while asleep.

Why not buy a pregnancy pillow, it is a long and comfortable pillow, which supports all of the areas, where your pressure points are.

I also normally sleep on my tummy, but while pregnant, I always used to put around 3 pillows under me, one between the legs, is really comfortable - I lay on my side but, it felt sort of like I was on my tummy.

    Good luck and congratulations :)

I personally stopped sleeping on my stomach around 5-6 months, but that was only when it became uncomfortable.

I tend to sleep on my left side now as sleeping on my back makes me feel sorter ill.

I was told sleeping on your stomach isn't bad for baby but it does leave baby with little room to move around LOl!

It will become more uncomfortable to do this once your uterus grows above your belly button usually. I lay on my side and put a pillow between my legs and hug another pillow which helps me stay on my side. Also, I use a contour memory foam pillow for my head which makes side sleeping way more comfortable.

You can sleep on your stomac until you no longer feel comfortable doing so. It won't hurt your baby, so no worries there.

I first felt flutters with my son at 17 weeks and then definite kicks at 24 weeks.

you should feel 'flutters' around 20 weeks.

from 20 weeks, i wouldn't sleep on ur stomach. it is very uncomfortable. the best position would be on ur side .
