Adult seeks "green" gift for 13-year-old. Help!?
I'm attending a bar mitzvah soon for a kid who is very much into environmental issues, and I'd like my gift to be in this area. He lives in New York City, Upper West Side, a stone's throw from Broadway (up there), so he's a sophisticated urbanite--as sophisticated as one can be at 13. If possible, I want to get him something other than money or a donation to some cause or another or a gift card or anything electronic, video or computer related. I'm figuring $50 to $100. Any ideas? Thanks.

How about "adotping" an animal at the zoo?
It's definitely a green gift, the money goes to a good cause (upkeep of the animal, as well as research if it's an endangered species), and your friend can go visit "his" animal any time. Most zoos supply at least a photo and an "adoption certificate".
Adoptions usually last for a year, but you can probably organise a longer term plan if you prefer. You should be able to arrange things on the zoo's website.

How about a journal made from recycled paper and recycled book covers?

You could get him several to add up to the $50-$100 price range. We have a company that makes them here in my home city, they're pretty cool.
