How to cover head without religion?
Hi, I know this sounds like a troll question but it's really not. I have always dressed modestly but I have never covered my hair unless I would wear a toque or something. One time I wore a hijab to the bar as an experiment. (I didn't mean it to be disrespectful i did it for my Muslim friend who was having a hard time finding friends and didn't think she'd be let into the bar.) Wearing the hijab felt right. Ever since I've been wanting to cover my hair. The only problem is I'm an atheist and I don't want to be mistaken for Religious. Plus my family is atheist too and would disown me if they thought I was wearing it because I converted. Is there a way to cover your hair without wearing a scarf? Are there any Muslim girls that cover their hair without it being too obvious that they're doing it for modesty? I know this is a weird question but I'm not a troll and I honestly want to know.
mousbah: I agree with you. I think Hijabi women do stick out in North America and for that I don't think they are modest. That's why I want to cover my hair without sticking out. Like if someone saw me they wouldn't think twice about me covering my hair. That's why I'd like a way to do it without sticking out.
Mousbah: I am an atheist but lately I feel like Islam speaks to me could you please elabborate on why you're a former Muslim?

Why don't you develop confidence and learn to love your femininity? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Women who veil, mostly because of cultural reasons, or religious brainwashing think that the veil or covering their hair will result in respect. This has never been and will never be so. When the veil spreads, it becomes more about who is veiled and who is not veiled. Men have to learn to respect women regardless of what they wear, even if they are close to being nude. The hijab or covering the hair in the end makes a woman more of an object, then it protects her. No matter how you cover your hair with a scarf it will look like you are in a hijab, even if it looks more in fashion. You will just appear to be a less religious muslimah who is attempting a fashion statement. Really, I suggest that you work on your self esteem and accepting yourself, scarf is not necessary. If you are really so obsessed with modesty you should also realize that covering your hair does not make you modest. The clothing itself and your behavior is what makes you modest. I hope you do not fall into the trap of islam. Many false atheists are dragged into islam when they are insecure and they begin experimenting with these kinds of extreme symbols. I would also like to add that modesty includes not standing out. In the american culture the hijab does in fact stand out and will go against "modesty. Once again do not fall into the islamist agenda of hijab, it is one step away from becoming one of them. Women in many islamic countries or communities are forced to hijab and you want to enslave yourself..really I don't see this! What is wrong with the false feminist of today?

If you wear it literally all the time, people probably will assume it is religious. If I were you, I'd spend some time thinking about why you want to cover your hair. Just don't like it? Find it is too much bother taking care of it? Perhaps a different style is the answer. Very short or even bald might resolve the issue for you.
You consider it modesty. But modesty involves not being conspicuous. That is to say, blending in with the crowd. Or to be blunt, being boring-looking.

If you mean keeping your hair covered all the time - as Muslim women do - there is no way to do this without people thinking it is for religious reasons.

Don't wear it in the way many Muslim girls do, if you don't want to be mistaken as religious. Wear it as an obvious fashion statement.

you could always put a scarf on your head and knot it in the back and wear turtle necks
