I think it was. If anyone has taken a world history class, they can see the positive, as well as the negative effects of religion on the world. However, in today's world, it does more harm than good.

However, I do not think it helped the world by keeping people sane. When missionaries traveled to new lands, they brought science, literature, mathematics, new ideals, technology, etc. with them, which created progress. However, they also carried and created diseases, violence, and conflicts between states that hindered progress. Back in the day, they were very important.

With the amount of communication we have today, religion and missionaries are no longer needed for this purpose. Granted there were other uses for religion back then, this was the main one.

To "drop or not to drop" religion is a complicated question, because religion by nature assumes spirituality. That is, if we were to get rid of religion, we might "throw the child out with the water" and immerse ourselves into materialism, which is devoid of any virtue above that of bodily profit. So religion in a way has been a "necessary" evil, for it kept within itself a gate to spirituality, however it was formatted for a dogmatic frame of mind, which is no longer the case within a general public. That is, the mind set is less dogmatic these days. Religion just needs to be changed into less dogmatic, and more spiritual format.

Religion is just a certain way of life some people want to live, with certain laws. It's no different than the culture of a country. If one isn't interested in those rules, they do not have to participate in that religion. If you take religion away, there will still be good and evil, just like there was before religion. Before there was Christianity, before Judaism, there was still good and evil. It's evil that needs to be done away with.

Humans are spiritual beings as well as carnal beings so getting rid of the spiritual life is not an option,

A true religion would be great and will be great when God himself makes himself known to all, so that we all will have a pure language, and a pure starting point from which to address our questions. Then and only then will the world see Spirit as a wonderful, joyous thing to be sure.

Thinking on these lines, makes me think that this would be the one factor that would bring human kind together. The hope for God to reveal himself to us all, so that all contention would stop. I think that is one little thing that all humans would hope for, don't you?
