Can anybody out there recommend a good product for mats in long hair breds?
I have a Maltese and Yorkie and am not always home to groom them daily as needed, due to my job, to keep the mats from taking over. I have tried different conditioners but none of them seem to work. I live with my dad, who is with them when I am out of town, but he has arthritis real bad and can't groom them. Please help! I have clipped them down as far as I can with the winter weather, and they do have jackets to wear, but in order to get their coats back to normal I will have to have them shaved and I don't want to have to keep doing that. My little 3lb Maltese nearly has a heart attack just putting her in the car let alone going to a groomer. By the way, I do have a bit more than minimal skills at clipping myself. For those of you who aren't aware, before you send a snide answer, mats can cause health issues if not tended to in a dog such as parasites from fly eggs and skin infections.

Being as you have a busy life style and just can't daily as needed, due to job. What you should do is keep these dogs in what is referred to as a close puppy cut. If you don't want to do that then go get a de matting tool, and some either de matting powder or just a plain ole box of corn starch from grocery store. Apply to mats and rub in then use the de matting tool to de matt the clump.

After they are clean and matt free, spray with "the stuff" (yes, that is the brand's name) and brush through the coat. I don't use this on show dogs, but on pets it gives the hair a bit of a slickness that keeps soft hair from matting.
Try it, you'll be impressed! I think Cherrybrook or Brown's kennel supply would carry it. My bottle has lasted for years, because you cut it 1:10.

Wetting matts will only make them tighter. Les Pooch matzapper is excellent for dematting dogs: http://manorlakedogboutique.com/emergency-matzappe...
