Need old school progressive death metal?
Currently I really enjoy Death's album "The Sound of Perseverance", it's their most progressive sounding album. Is there any old school death metal bands which play a progressive style that are recommended?

DEMILICH. They are exactly what you want, very technical, progressive old-school death metal. Weird as hell.

You won't get very far with this question... (and as of now you've had some very sh*tty answers... calling Pantera progressive is just retarded... in fact, they're a Regressive Metal Band, consisting of juvenile lyrics and ripped off melodies, doing nothing to advance or innovate)
The closest you'll get before the 2000s are the albums Heartwork by Carcass, Spectral Sorrows by Edge of Sanity, and Still Life by Opeth (personally I believe Blackwater Park has gotten too popular, the first 4 albums were equally great)

Um hello, you're all forgetting some of the best ones.
- Pan.Thy.Monium - "Dawn of Dreams (1992)" (true old school progressive death)
- Æthyria - anything, especially the later stuff (eh, progressive black/death metal) all of which can be downloaded free from his website - http://www.aethyria.com/disc/discography.html
- Conspiracy (USA)... the one from Alabama (since there are 900 from the U.S.) - "Death and Despair (2004 Demo)" - contact me about obtaining this one, I can get a digital copy to you for free.
- Quo Vadis (POL) Yeah, from POLAND, not the highly overrated bull **** from Canada (no offense Canada). Get the albums "Uran (1997)" and "Król (2002)" and maybe "Babel (2007)" (but don't start with Babel). The worst of those three is Babel, I can't speak for the rest of their albums as I've not heard then and they're a ***** and a half to find.

they're a pretty new band, but try Augury. I find that their newest album, 'Fragmentary Evidence' bears quite a resemblance to 'The Sound of Perseverance'
