The Prius has two batteries. A small 12V battery that costs $105.41 and a large traction battery. The traction battery costs $1,747.24 plus installation (about $600) for a new battery. There are companies that refurbish the battery for about $1000, or you can get a battery from a wreck for about $500. Note that it's possible to refurbish the 2001's battery with cells from a 2004-2009 Prius, so parts to refurbish aren't a problem. Toyota pays a $200 bounty on the old battery--assuming you go the new battery or battery from a wreck route and don't need the old battery as a core.

As far as the misinformation about the environment goes. The Sudbury mine from which the nickel was mined was an environmental disaster in the sixties but during the eighties it was cleaned up and now wins awards from Environment Canada and others as an example of the best environmental mining practices. That's right, the "researchers" had to go back forty years to find dirt because they couldn't find any current problems (1960 vintage Prius are a bit rare--the first Prius being made in 1996--the 1997 model year). In addition, only one percent of the mine's output goes to batteries of all kinds. Most of the rest of the mine's output goes to produce tableware and chrome for gas-guzzlers. A few other environmental facts:

The NiMH battery is less toxic than the standard lead-acid battery all the components in it are recyclable. The Prius has a lead acid battery too, but it's half the size of an old fashioned car.

The Prius is produced in a no-landfill factory.

The Prius' plastics are bio-plastics rather than petroleum based.

The Prius has been designed for recycling. Even the wiring harness is designed for easy removal at end of life.

Some whine about flying parts in or other transportation costs. All car manufacturers do this and last I checked it was a shorter distance from China to Japan than from China to the US (not that many "American" cars are made in the US). So the transport of materials is wash between all the car companies.

JerryJ has it all exactly right - I nominate his answer as best. I have a couple of additions, though. Having the 12 volt battery disconnected in old Prius cars may trigger failure of the traction battery. No solid data on this, but I noticed a few forum posts where the traction battery system began throwing the trouble codes that signal main battery failure very soon after the 12 volt auxiliary battery was replaced. If it is true it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

It is theoretically possible to change the main battery at home. If and when the time comes I plan to do it myself, but I have done all the other maintenance on our two 2002s and all our family cars, have 45 years experience in electronics and work with high voltages on a regular basis. I stop short of recommending it to average drivers. Did I mention the battery weighs 110 lbs, too?

To Joshua: The HV/Main/Traction battery starts the engine too via MG1 in the PSD transaxle. The Prius does not have a 12V starter motor but it does (97-09) have a blanking plate installed to cover the hole where the starter would normally be as the block is the same one that the Echo and Yaris have. All the 12V battery does is operate the IOD (ignition off draw) items and boot the computers. After that the 12v bus is supplied via a 100 amp DC-DC converter off of the HV bus.

Are you talking about the battery to start the engine or the battery for thy hybrid system. The battery to start is around $150-$200

I think you can just exchange your brakes for a new battery.

so it begins...do you know how many cubic yards of wetland was strip mined to make one battery for your socially conscious, environmentally friendly hippie sled? can you live with the thought that dozens of innocent creatures have given their lives so that you may continue to drive your hybrid? hope this helps.
