Pittsburgh and the Winter Classic?

"Pittsburgh is a leading contender to host the 2011 NHL Winter Classic, which could pit rival league superstars Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals in a New Year's Day outdoor hockey game at Heinz Field or PNC Park."

^^ That's part of the article from The Tribe.

My thoughts - the winter classic would probably be the most interesting thing PNC Park will probably ever see. BUUUUT, I don't think Pittsburgh should play in another winter classic.. I think other teams deserve to play in it.

I also thought Pittsburgh was really trying to host the All-Stars game. Does anybody have any information on that? Also, what are your thoughts on Pittsburgh and the Winter Classic?

Update:

NBC has way too much power and they need to get over their Pens crush. haha

But yeah, i also hate the fact that NBC doesn't let fans watch games out on the big screen during the playoffs. One company shouldn't have THAT much power.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was in Pittsburgh in 2011... NBC pretty much tells the NHL what they want the game to be... that's why Philly played this year, and not Montreal, which is what Boston fans wanted.

Pittsburgh is one of the 5 teams NBC will broadcast games of... I think the Crosby Ov game is what they would ultimately want... that would provide top ratings.

There is an outside chance that Citi Field gets it, since Yankee Stadium is being used for a College Bowl.

Bettman has also said that he prefers baseball stadiums to football, the sight lines aren't as good, but the ice is better, they have to skate on it fr a least a week so it settles in and it takes a week or so to set up, so they like baseball stadiums b/c they aren't being used in late December.

I want Denver to get it at Coors and fr the Avs to play Dallas or or St Louis. NBC needs to share more of the league with the American audience.

When I read about the NHL possibly hosting the 2011 Winter Classic in Pittsburgh I thought that it would be a great thing for the city and for either venue: PNC Park which holds 35,000 or Heinz Field which can hold 65,000. When I read that they wanted to include the Penguins in the actual game I didn't expect it and truly felt that other teams should be given the chance. I can honestly say though that having The Pittsburgh Penguins vs The Washington Capitals in the Winter Classic is a wonderful idea and is guaranteed to be another epic match-up, but it might be a little too soon.

I'm not sure about Pittsburgh hosting the All-Stars game, but I know that they wanted to host the 2011 NHL Draft at the new Consol Energy Center. No word yet on if that's going to happen.

My thoughts on Pittsburgh: What else can I say - I love living in Pittsburgh!

I’ve heard of a Winter classic occurring next year in California, but which teams LA, San Jose, Anaheim or maybe an opposition between rivals like an Anaheim/Dallas, San Jose/Detroit (even if the wings played the ‘hawks last year) or what? Nobody knows

i am so sick of hearing about the damn pens. the last thing we need is the pens in another winter classic. im getting sick of hearing about the caps too and i like them. jesus is this how people felt when the suns "were the best show on sneakers" and the talk of the nba? its so annoying. there are 30 teams how bout spreading the love. im sick of the east coast teams in general. the west is way better but we get no spotlight.

the 2011 all star game is ours due to us losing it from the lockout. if we lose it due to our ownership problems then it will most likely go to carolina who already put a bid in.

i'm somewhat shocked myself that they could enable the Penguins play of their second wintry climate classic in 4 years. although the NHL needs to do some thing it would want to to entice extra new followers, and with all the Crosby/Ovechkin hype, a wintry climate classic between both might want to definitley do this. i'm no longer all that loopy about the Penguins/Capitals bias the media has, and that i'm a Penguins fan, yet when that's what the NHL feels they desire to do to make the NHL extra regular, so be it. with the aid of ways, they pronounced it would want to be at Heinz field, no longer percentPark.

What stinks about this is that they only want to winter classic in big hockey markets ( boston, buffalo, chicago)

That eliminates a significant portion ( at least USA side) of teams, simply because they don't think the revenue will be good enough.

Thus they will use all of the big markets that they have in the US trying to promote the game and increase its popularity before they move it to the (now) smaller markets.

You also have to consider weather. California and florida aren't exactly cold weather states...

I truly think the next one should be in Canada.

Great! My husband fell asleep with the remote gripped in his hand. He's snoring. I am stuck watching Cash Cab. Sigh.
