Difference between 40 & 56 mega-pixel cameras?

Medium format cameras, having sensors that are much larger than traditional 35mm or "full frame", can fit a lot more pixels without noise having to become any sort of issue. Besides, typical applications that call for medium format cameras are always shot at the lowest ISO anyways, like ISO 25 or 50. If you need the most possible detail, get the 56 megapixel camera. I personally wouldn't worry too much over it though, 40 megapixels is plenty enough for professional work.

The difference between a 40mp and 56mp camera is 16mp. The resolution you need depends on how you’ll use the digital files. You only need low res for web posting but you need higher res for very large prints or if you’ll do extensive cropping. You can make a larger high quality print from a 56mp file than from a 40mp file. 40mp will give a 34 x 52 print. 56mp will give a 40 x 60 print.

I only looked at B&H. In 40mp and 56mp I see Mamiya and Hasselblad medium format. Lower resolutions include Leica. All are excellent. Youll have to research the specs and features to see which is particularly best for your particular needs. Also hold the different models to see which feels best to you and has the controls layout you like. Take some in store test photos saved to a card so you can review them at home. Of course the image quality will be affected by the lens on the camera. It may not be a bad body just a bad lens.

The types of photography like Landscape? Portrait? Product? Architechture? Travel? Will be affected more by the lens you choose than the body you choose.

There really isn't much of a difference between 10 and 12 mega pixels. Mega pixels essentially allow you to make the photo larger without the picture being totally distorted. Either would be fine for your purposes.

Mega-pixels are the images quality. 56 is higher than 40, so the picture will produce a better image, but 40 is still really good. I have a seven mega-pixel camera, and the quality is good. The difference, other than the images, is the prices. Of course, the better the quality, the more expensive it will be. Just google images of picture that was taken using a 40 and 56 mega-pixel camera, and than you will know for yourself:)
