How do you wean yourself off Ambien?
I've been taking it for nearly a month now. Doctor told me to try, about every week, to cut myself off and sleep naturally but I'd always have insomnia that night. I know I need to wean myself off it but how? The pills are tiny so I can't cut them in half. Do I try to replace it with OTC sleeping medication? I only have one pill left after tonight.

Ambien is very difficult to come off of. If you were on the 10 mg, you could have cut them in half with a pill cutter and gone down to 5 mg a night, then try every other night, every 3rd night, etc. To stop cold turkey will be difficult. Expect a few nights up to a week of insomnia. Your body will eventually adjust to not having it, but it will be a bumpy road fo a while. Good luck.

What should I avoid?
Ambien may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking this medicine, especially if you take the extended-release tablet, or if you are a woman. Wait until you are fully awake before you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries.
Avoid taking Ambien during travel, such as to sleep on an airplane. You may be awakened before the effects of the medication have worn off. Amnesia (forgetfulness) is more common if you do not get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep after taking Ambien.
Do not take this medicine if you have consumed alcohol during the day or just before bed.

Lorazepam and zolpidem are a good mix. If Ativan--i'm guessing a million or 2 mgs--placed you to sleep, 10mg of ambien will turn you right into a zombie. The Lorazepam (ativan) is truly for stress yet can help a nap med. Ambien rather worked more desirable effective for my stress than a million or 2 mg of ativan. Are you on suboxone upkeep?

OTC won't do anything for you.
You thought you had insomnia before? You have no idea what you're in for now. Ambien is the devil.
