Is it alright to keep working out and lifting weights after I dislocated my shoulder?

I dislocated my shoulder about a year ago and every time I lift weights now my shoulder starts to hurt. It is usually more of an ache than a sharp pain. Is it OK to work through the pain or should I just stop trying to lift weights?

If you have dislocated your shoulder you have to careful how you lift weights. If it is hurting you your body is giving you a sign that you need to take some time off and then modify the way you do shoulder exercises. Usually you are more prone to dislocating a joint when it is what is called a closed pack position. For your shoulder it is rasiing your arm to the side and exernally rotating like you would when you would do a base ball pitch. You have to try to avoid such positions when you exercise.

I dont know what kind of dislocation you had though the most common shoulder dislocation is anterior. When it pops to the front. If you have this kind of dislocation and have had no surgry you have to build up the sub scapularis. Along with that you need to work on the other rotator cuff muscles spurapinatus, infrapinatus and teres minor. The more strenth you have in the rotator cuff muscles the more stable your shoulder joint will be. For now owrk on doing isolation exercises to build up the rotator cuffs muscles which means doing 3 main movements internal rotation, external rotation and abdution. You can do these exercises with a theraband and very very light dumbells like 3 lbs would be enough. Focus on building these muscles up before you go back to lifting the full time. Keep in mind you will have to avoid certain exercises or find substitues if you get pain.
