conjunctivitis ... 18 month old .. what to do?

i think my 18 month old has conjunctivitis . the bottom of his eye lids are redder then usual and he has some gunk coming out of one eye .. not alot , but its still there .

Ive never had any experience with this so i was wondering if i needed to take him to see the doctor ?

or is it something that usually goes away after a few days .

He did spike a fever last night , has a cough and a snotty nose but tht could be teething because thats always what happens when a tooth comes thru for him .

but i did have a slight cold the other week , so it might be that too.

So is it as simple as getting drops from the chemist , or more serious .

I have been cleaning each eye with a clean damp cloth a few times today .

and apart for the red eye he is acting like his normal self

Update:

i didnt think doctors gave antibiotics to kids under 2 unless it was something major, thats why i was a bit hesitant

Both of my children have had conjunctivitis more than once. I took them to the doctor the first time they had it, and the doctor explained that the best treatment is to bathe their eyes frequently with cotton wool and cooled boiled water. This will clear it up in a few days. If after a few days the problem is still there, take them back to the GP and they will prescribe drops.

Most cases of conjunctivitis come along with a cold and are caused by a virus, the drops only work on bacterial infections so won't help the problem.

On my children bathing their eyes has worked every time. try it over the weekend and if the problem is still there on monday, take him to the GP.

    Hope this helps.

Use compresses to clean the gunk out of her eyes and eyelashes, and make sure you wash your hands religiously after coming in contact with the baby, and wash her hands frequently as well. Warm water might work better after she has been sleeping and the discharge has had a chance to dry. Don't buy anything over the counter until your doctor has seen her. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or even an allergic reaction, so you don't want to potentially put anything in her eye that could make the condition worse.

My daughter got it. She had the cold first and because she wiped snot all over her face and got it in her eyes she got conjunctivitis too. I took her to the doctor because it didnt clear up by itself, it would seem to go away then come back worse. They gave me a small tube of eye drops, very easy to use and it was gone after a week of treatment.

I recommend going to the doctors. People say use cold teabags etc but they only take down the swelling, they dont kill the infection. You dont want his tear ducts or eyes getting damaged by the infection, get to the doctors.

When my son who isnt two until may had an eye infection my mom would take a coton ball and put warm regular tea on it, no sugar just plain and let it cool to where you can just clean the area with it. then obviously wash your hands after and throw it away. I also saw on the tv show The Doctors, the pedi on there said you can mix equal amounts of water and baby shampoo(tear free) and do the same with a cotton ball. It will clean that infected area. They also said you can put used chamomile tea bags.

If he has conjunctivitis you really need to get him some antibiotics. With some antibiotics his eyes will clear up within a few days. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and very annoying to have. You cant get anything over the counter for it, you will need a script from the Dr.

My son had that about a month ago, I took him to the doctors the next day and she gave me some eye drops. Me and my partner couldn't get it in his eye as he wouldn't sit still but luckily it went away itself. I would go to your docs because the longer you leave it the more painful it could get and its always best to catch something before it gets worse.
