Adopting a German Shepherd question?

Do you think it is safe to adopt a German Shepherd that is 2 years old? She is very smart but I have 3 kids 9, 6, and 12 months and Im a little worried about it. She was raised around a little girl so she has been socialized with children, but I have never owned a shepherd so just wanted some advise.

Shepherds are very good family dogs. But it is a dog. When she first comes to your house she will be stressed so make sure your kids don't bombard her. Stay in the room with the group for the first couple days and gauge the dogs reaction and keep everyone calm. "Introduce" your kids to her. Let them pet her and get to know her and she them. All dogs have their own personalities and you will have to get to know hers. Don't rush it. Be kind and loving and your dog will return it.

If you have never owned this breed then I would suggest getting another type of dog. They are very intelligent and will test you with what they can do and get away with. German Shepherds will not listen if they sense that they are stronger minded than their owner, however they will also not respond well to harsh discipline. Owners need to have an air of natural authority to their demeanor. They need somewhere to channel their mental and physical energy. This is not a breed who will be happy simply laying around your living room or locked out in the back yard. They need lots of exercise so if you are unable to take the dog for at least two 45 to 60 minute walks a day, another breed may be better for you.

A german shepherd is a very good dog. I was raised with german shepherds and they never harmed me or (when I had kids) my children. The dog is only as good as it is treated or has been treated. Just make sure she has a gentle manner, and she should be fine.

German Shepards are great dogs with beautiful natures, I think it would be fine to get one. But you should never ever ever ever leave it alone near the children until they are much older, I wouldnt even leave the 9 yo alone with the dog .because although you can have them for years and they be very placid they can just turn straight away. But you also have to consider that these are big dogs who need a large yard and daily exercise, would you really have enough time to talk it for a good 30 minute walk everyday? If not maybe consider getting a cat.

Regardless of breed, age, or anything else for that matter...the dog and the kids have to be supervised 100% of the time.

I wouldnt be as worried about the 9 year old...you can reason with the child and explain how the dog should be treated. A 6yr old and a 12 months old....make sure you are ALWAYS present. I have a 7yr old in the house, who's been known to kick or hit my GSD mix because he doesnt listen to her or steals her toys.....its still an animal, no matter how well trained...a dog will react.

they are wonderful dogs but do need alot of space to run around . They should be good with ur kids, of course you always want to keep an eye on them . I've had mine around my nieces and nephews which she is not use to being around and she takes care of them very well , I do prepare the kids and let them know they have to b kind to the dog , I ve never had a problem but I always keep an eye out.
