Are my skates too sharp?

OK....this may sound strange. But I've been skating every day for about 3 weeks, teaching my kids. I'm no pro, though I learned a lot had fun and thought I'd better sharpen skates. This is what happened. All of a sudden now, while skating straight, the skates suddenly catch and slow down at unpredictable rates. So much so, that I suddenly feel thrown forward in this skates and am losing balance. Can I dullen these skates any way? It's ridiculous. I wish I never had them done. When I started skating a 3 weeks ago, I sharped them and noticed nothing unusual at all!

Sounds like they weren't sharpened properly or you've got rust spots on the blades.

Take the skates back to the sharpener and have him/her take a look at them.

hi Al, i might elect to positioned on my own skates. you don't recognize who's been donning hire ones. hire skates are no longer sharpened very frequently the two. Your skates would be as sharp using fact the final time you wore them. preserving them in a cabinet for 3 years won't cause them to blunt. If there is any rust, this ought to polish off. lots of ice rinks have a grinding device and could sharpen your blades at an identical time as you wait- for a small value. Have a great occasion! possibly you may initiate skating extra frequently?

Sounds like they're sharp alright! Are you skating at a rink? If there are wooden benches or railings or something of the sort, take the skate off of your foot and pull it along the wood 8-10 times on each edge. It will dull it a little bit, but not dulled down so much that the edges are completely gone.

If you can do snowplough stops do a few of these gently round the rink, Slaloms work as well. . When you get them sharpened next time just ask the grinder to take the sharpness off Lot's of people prefer them not to be over sharp.
