“Sleepies,” “crusties,” “eye boogers,” “sand” What is it? Where does it come from?

And why is it that sometimes there's a whole lot of it and sometimes there is nothing?

It's a combination of tears, mucus and perhaps dust or dirt. It occurs because we do not blink during sleep. The amount may vary due to the quantity of contaminants we have in the eye and whether other conditions coexist, such as a cold where there would be more mucus produced in the nose.

For the most part, it's benign and should just be addressed by gentle cleansing with a washcloth with warm water and a little soap and then rinsed well. If it becomes persistent or has a greenish or yellowish color, it may be a more serious condition (infection) and require a doctor's attention.

When you smell an onion your eyes may tear from excess fluids that are not pure water. The tears contain proteins and salts that protect the eye and the contents can even vary with emotions and cause. While asleep the tears still keep the eyes moist and some collects at the lid (especially the corner of the closed eye) and dry leaving behind a crust. Any minor eye irritation could alter the amount of crust.

I try to wipe my dogs eyes daily with tissues to prevent tear stains. So yes I do clean any eye discharge or crusty stuff from around the eyes with a tissue.

It's "Gound" a thin mucus naturally produced by the eye. Normally it is wiped away by blinking but as this doesn't occur during sleep it can build up
