What keeps India together as one country?
9 AnswersPolitics9 years agoCan someone explain to me the poem "To some ladies" by John Keats?
I'd love it if you explained it to me word by word.
Here is the poem-
To Some Ladies
What though while the wonders of nature exploring,
I cannot your light, mazy footsteps attend;
Nor listen to accents, that almost adoring,
Bless Cynthia’s face, the enthusiast’s friend:
Yet over the steep, whence the mountain stream rushes,
With you, kindest friends, in idea I rove;
Mark the clear tumbling crystal, its passionate gushes,
Its spray that the wild flower kindly bedews.
Why linger you so, the wild labyrinth strolling?
Why breathless, unable your bliss to declare?
Ah! you list to the nightingale’s tender condoling,
Responsive to sylphs, in the moon beamy air.
’Tis morn, and the flowers with dew are yet drooping,
I see you are treading the verge of the sea:
And now! ah, I see it—you just now are stooping
To pick up the keep-sake intended for me.
If a cherub, on pinions of silver descending,
Had brought me a gem from the fret-work of heaven;
And smiles, with his star-cheering voice sweetly blending,
The blessings of Tighe had melodiously given;
It had not created a warmer emotion
Than the present, fair nymphs, I was blest with from you
Than the shell, from the bright golden sands of the ocean
Which the emerald waves at your feet gladly threw.
For, indeed, ’tis a sweet and peculiar pleasure,
(And blissful is he who such happiness finds,)
To possess but a span of the hour of leisure,
In elegant, pure, and aerial minds.
Thank you.

And why is it that sometimes there's a whole lot of it and sometimes there is nothing?

7 AnswersBiology1 decade agoWhy do white scratch lines appear appear on dry skin?
In winter when your skin is a little dry and you care not to apply a moisturizer, and you hadn't taken a bath since eons 'cause well, you don't want to.
Then things get a little itchy. And like a good scratcher, you scratch. And there they are! The pretty white lines. What is the mechanism exactly, Answerholics?

5 AnswersFashion & Accessories1 decade agoWhy is it that generally, magazines with good content and quality fail to maintain their zing over time?
I am specifically talking about India and Indian magazines but the question is open for all opinions and answers.
Can we blame ourselves for our poor taste in literature or, is it just that a magazine has a certain limit beyond which it is either afraid to or is unable to step out and explore.
Great children's Hindi magazines like Champak, Nandan, Balhans, ChandaMama which used to be published in multiple Indian languages and were loaded with great infotainment and literature when I was a kid. (I am only 19 myself) are still surviving in the market but a GREAT deal of compromise in terms of quality is apparent there. Same is the case with Kadambari, DharmYug (out of print) and other grown-ups' magazines.
What leads to the ultimate downhill fall of a good magazine?
(I am categorizing this question under "Books and Authors" and not "Entertainment> Magazines" because my concern is inclined specially towards literary magazines.)
6 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoHow exactly can having "too much history" affect a country or society's present-day scenario?
In a novel "Riot" set in Indian background written by Mr. Shashi Tharoor, one of the characters, an American businessman says to Indians- "You have too much history. Far more than you can use peacefully. So you end up wielding history like a battleaxe, against each other."
http://www.shashitharoor.com/articles/nyt/indiaspa...
I did not actually read the novel, and my question is not based on the novel either. It is just a follow-up to my last question-

5 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWhat are the implications of having lack of arts and culture on a society?
Similarly, how would it harm the city if there is too much art and culture and little importance is given to the money matters?
What factors help strike a balance between arts and finances?
From a social psychologist's point of view, what complications can arise from the extreme cases of both?
(I am not a psychologist so, I guess you needn't be a psychologist to answer this question either)
Eagerly awaiting some enlightening answers and real-life examples of either too money-minded big cities or too artistic and cultural towns...
Thanks
5 AnswersPsychology1 decade agoDoes considering photography an art belittle the importance of life-like painting as an art?
I read about the topic in a magazine called "Smart Photography" (in India) where the writer ridiculed the argument made by a few painter folk that photography in itself is an "un-artistic art" because it uses modern technology (camera, image manipulation software etc.) to illustrate the artist's creativity saying that brush, paint ans canvas etc. are external (modern scientific) aids too.
I see this as an endless debate. Your views are welcome.
Is painting a "higher" form of art than photography?
10 AnswersPhotography1 decade agoHow does light differentiate between its paths of travel?
This is a question that I always pondered about.
In the phenomenon of refraction, light bends away from the normal to make up for the increase in speed when it enters a rarer medium. Is this something really fundamental to physical laws.....
.... or is there a reason for light to show "signs of sentience"?
8 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoWhat is lacking in our present education system and how can we make sustainable changes to correct it?
A good education system is fundamental to a nation that wants to be economically and otherwise independent. In my view, India still has a long way to go to reach this goal.
As a student, I’ve seen many improvements in our school curriculum.Through the years, I have seen the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) try to provide "balanced textbooks" and helpful supplementary texts. Yet problems like emphasis on memorizing certain paragraphs from books and evaluation on the basis of "bookish knowledge" still persist.
These dilemmas need to be amended with the help of educators, parents, and teachers. What can be done to alleviate the crisis?
725 AnswersTeaching1 decade agoWhat separates good science fiction from bad science fiction? What is bad science fiction?
I recently read an article by Mr. Jayant Narlikar (famous Indian astrophysicist) where the author gave an overview of the writings of H G Wells, Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury and said that bad science fiction is the one which creates irrational fear of science among readers and takes irresponsibly big liberties.
While, good sci-fi paves the path for new scientific explorations.
I guess, you have to take certain liberties with science fiction and you have to write about fancy stuff like anti-gravity, faster-than-light spaceships etc.
My question is, how do you draw the line?
And what exactly should a good science fiction writer do?
Any suggested readings?
7 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoDoes the island of Magnesia in Greece still have those magnetic deposits?
I thought that being known since 800 BC mustn't have been something in favour of their existence but still, are they still there?
If they are or would have been there, how would have they affected the daily life there?
Do they or did they fascinate the researchers and physicists?
Really a very broad question but yea.... I am curious.
2 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoHow are you going to explain in terms of chemistry & physics so important a biological phenomenon as love?
"How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?" This is quote by famous physicist Albert Einstein..... I just was curious if some sincere scientist was really interested in answering the question.... how would have he gone about it?
Can the question be answered?
Thanks, Einsteins. :-)
