This can get a bit ambiguous or air fairy, without knowing you and your preferences.
Food, you can eat the food off the carts and save alot of money. Don't like that, eat where the Thai eat, food courts in the buildings and malls, the foods is very good and just a bit more than the street. Then there are the restaurants in your hotel or other hotels, they are usually very good. Then there are the tourist traps. Save the tourist traps for a very very nice meal. it's too hot and the food is too good to always go to restaurants.
Clothing, you can buy off street or go to certain malls in Bangkok depending on what you are looking for.
Hotels, look online, Thailand is bit backward when it comes to online advertising. Very few hotel chains so they discount to consolidators like agoda.com, asiarooms.com, res24.com, sawadee.com Rates change each October 31st so if you look for November and December rates now, might not find the rate.
Travel, in Bangkok, I prefer to use the skytrain and subway, then a taxi. I am getting too old for wind in my face to take a tuk-tuk. hahahaha The train system is good if you are traveling between cities that are on the train route, otherwise its by bus. Long haul, maybe a local airline.
Try things out, see what you like and don't
www.thaiwebsites.com, good general website for Thailand
www.thailandguru.com, to understand the culture
www.bangkok.com, for touristy places in Bangkok
www.a2zpattaya.com, for stuff in Pattaya
Good luck and enjoy

Question: "Whats a good way to spend money in Thailand?" - in what respect? You haven't specified here and we are just left to make assumptions.
Do you want to invest in Thailand, or just come for a good time?
If investing, make sure you know the procedures for foreigners investing in Thailand; it is not as straightforward as you might think.
If visiting for a holiday, accommodation, food and the general standard of living is great value for money. You can have a phenomenal time without breaking the bank.

Well, sure, all of the above, as you will spend money on food, hotels etc - - but I assume you are talking about extra money.
If you want to treat yourself a foot massage in a nice comfy recliner in an a/c storefront is pretty luxurious and not too expensive - - but maybe the best thing that you can do for yourself, is if you meet someone in need, give them some money - no, not the street beggars in bkk, not the pros, - but if you get upcountry and get out to some little village and see an old lady w/o shoes etc etc - help out a little - in the long and short run, it will make you feel good..

Wonderful People, Culture , Scenery and you don't need to break the bank either.
Don't worry if you can't do all you want to do in this trip because you will return , every body does.
Good sites for information are sawasdee.com, tripadvisor and others that you have already been given.

Easy. Spend on good food. Pay to go up baiyoke tower for a great view of the city. I think it's 200 baht...
Shop a lot at places like Pratunam. Buy clothes, shoes, handicrafts, snacks, souvenirs etc.
Take trips out of the city to places like Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi.
Pay for spa and massage treatments and relax to the max.

1. Buy land Especially near highways and near towns that seem to be growing.
2. Gold prices are down a bit and it might be worth it to buy a couple or baht.
3. Condoms, you can never have enough protection.
