When reading books by american authors I keep coming across "The Y" - people go swimming at the Y or whatever. What is the Y??

Short for YMCA, its a company across America that people go to exercise pretty much. They also specialize with kids. There's an afterschool program and they have daytime camps for kids (at least where I live).

YMCA - Young Men's Christian Association, but lately more affiliated with the Village People song about finding gay sex there. A place where you can work out, swim, take classes at a discounted rate. In some facilities they offer cut rate hostel style rooms.

Is it short for YMCA? That's the Young Men's Christian Association, but it's basically a hostel with facilities.
