Flax seed: ground or whole?

I've heard that flax seeds sail right through the body without imparting much in the way of omega-3s. I am making raw crackers. I will soak the flax for a couple hours. Will this make them easier to digest? Alternatively, I could grind them up and then soak 'em for a few hours.

What do you flax experts think?

Ground all the way. Even if you soak them, your body still cant break it down. Whole seeds are great sources of fiber but like you said, theres no way to get the omega 3's if it cant break down. Ground seeds have already broken down for you, so its way better for you because you get the omega 3's

Definately ground as according to the Mayo Clinic when you ground the flax seed, you are better able to digest it. This, contrary to whole flaxseed, can be taken in by your intestine entitling you to all of the health benefits that the flax seed contains.

You digestive track has a hard time breaking them up you can see for yourself when you go to the bathroom. They will usually come out whole. It is best to grind them up and use them that way.
