He came to Canada with the de Monts expedition in 1605. He spent the first three winters in Acadia in 1604-1607. In September, 1607 returned to France due to a lack of support. In July, 1608 he WAS BACK up the St. Lawrence River. He participated in the settlement of Acadia and established a settlement later called Quebec City in 1608. He formed relationships with the Montagnais, the Innu and with the Algonquin Indians against the Iroquois. He described the Great Lakes region.
In 1609 led an expedition up the Richelieu River. Quebec was a slow colony to develop. He labored with the Quebec colony from 1608 till his death December 25, 1631. In 1620 he was establishing trading companies and was told to return to Quebec as the Governor of New France.
