how do you know when you start ovulating each month?

You can figure it out the general way, but I did that for 2 months and didn't get pregnant. Then, the 3rd month, I used an ovulation prediction kit and found that I ovulate really late in the month (Day 19!!) We got pregnant that month!!

Try counting 10 days from the first day of your last period. That should be the day you ovulate. My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and Im trying this method myself before I buy a OPK. It may not be the most accurate but we have been trying to get pregnant since November and have not had much luck with the ovulation calculators on the computer.
