Can someone give me some arguments against having alcohol banned from a country!!!?
So I have a solo talk to prepare to present to the whole of my English Class. The topic i have to discuss is "The house thinks alcohol should be banned completely from the UK". I have to say why i am against it (I wasn't allowed to choose if i wanted to argue against or for it). I really need to get a good grade for this.
Idea's i have already:
If people are sensible then it's OK
Sociably acceptable
people can start to drink illegally by accessing it from abroad.
Poeple may resort to drugs
Any suggestions are grateful (:
Thanks x x x

Banning alcohol can increase crime rates by people trying to smuggle it in or trying to make it or trying to hide it from the law.
Banning alcohol will take away from the country considering that alcohol is something that was considered common and taxable, the government won't be able to tax something that they've banned. They can fine them when they are arrested, but they likely that they will make more from fees then from just taxing them on legal purchase are slim.
Banning alcohol can lead to more alcohol abuse. Because they can't have it when they want to... some will go over the top in consumption.
Again, it causes more illiegal activity... dating back to making "moonshine," they were illegally making it and selling it and the government eventually just gave in and made alcohol legal with conditions of course.
Hope that helps! GOod luck!

Alcohol was banned in the US from 1919 to 1933 and the only thing it did was to increase organized crime and violence. Marijuana and drugs are banned in most countries, and the only result is that their sale is controlled by criminals, so there is a lot more violence and a lot of people go to jail.
Alcohol, drug, marijuana, and tobacco abuse are medical problems and should be treated as such. Law enforcement measures to control or ban their use is ineffective and often counterproductive.

Use the disastrous results of prohibition in the United States in the early 20th century as an example.
Banning alcohol didn't actually stop people from drinking. It created a huge black market for the product and the profits from that black market fueled organized crime.

1. alcohol tax provides the state revenue for social services.
2. will lead to the rise of organized crime (bootlegging) and the violence that comes with it.
3. without government regulation of alcohol bootleggers will provide cheaper poisonous substitutes of alcohol to make greater profits at the expense of the consumer
4. its impossible to enforce because home distilling of alcohol is very simple and cheap.(moonshine)
the list could go on and on, just look up all the crime and problems America had during Prohibition

Without beer- the working class would revolt and wipe out the ruling class as they did in France in the past.
To the working stiff- beer is one of their few life's pleasures.
Yes- prohibition was a very dismal failure in the USA.

Studies have shown that certain alcohol in moderation can be beneficial to your health. Also, you could place the "religion card" and say that alcohol in integral to some religions.
