Why is God referred to as a male?
Just curious. Couldn't God, if one exists of course, be female or unisex? How do we know? Thanks in advance for answering.
Haha! Yeah, I would think that father gave it away if God himself wrote the Bible. Shout out to Floid and JayL for taking the time to answer the question with some intelligence. :) Thanks guys.

'God' is referred to as a 'male' because:
a) Patriarchy.
b) Marxist Theory (on how the bourgeoisie keeps things in control and therefore the proletariat are consistently distracted by more 'important' things other than deciding what sex God has).
c) The Bible said so.
d) Fundamentalist Theists (not just self-proclaimed Christians) said so.
e) People are too lazy to make 'God' more politically correct.
f) Believers would get confused otherwise.
and/or
g) to keep the male ego bloated (ref. [a])
Jokes aside, based on your elaboration, you seem to be agnostic. Personally, from a more...universal/spiritual/non-denominational perspective, I think this concept of 'God' is essentially 'unisex' or 'androgynous' by nature. It's like how in essence we have both Yin (femininity) and Yang (masculinity) in us.
How do we know? That's an entirely different question to answer altogether;
if we want to learn more about the Theist 'God', we can ask any informed, religious Christian, Muslim, and Jew.
However, to people of other belief systems, whatever they are, 'God' may be sexless, or the sex of 'God' (whether 'God' has a sex or not) may be entirely irrelevant to what 'God' means to them.
I hope my answer is helpful to you.

Everything in existence needs a male counterpart to reproduce countless likeness of themselves and a variety of other programs to ensure the survival of their species; a female could not do this alone. Asexual reproduction only produces countless versions of itself, therefore, GOD could not be female or unisex, because all order in the universe always starts its pattern with a male beginning and proceeds its standard with the female counterpart: for example a big bang, then a star begins to form, etc , et. al. And, Jesus Christ is the same resemblance to his father in heaven, and Adam was made in the image of the GOD and his Son. Furthermore, the strongest mammals on the planet are MASCULINE.

well, if there' a father and a son...there must be a mother somewhere~
The word for "Spirt' had always been female until the translators of the new testament made it a neuter. Binah Shekinah Hokmah Adam was male and female...and then separated.
The original language of texts, both Hebrew and Greek, make this very clear: Hebrew Chochma and Greek Sophia are both feminine nouns. The authors of the Wisdom books took this gender specificity seriously and envisioned Wisdom as Mother, God's consort and bride, the Divine Feminine through which the masculine God fashioned all creation."

Has God said let us make man in our image after our likeness"...Genesis 1: 26
Did God make Adam both male and female, Genesis 1: 27 , Now we have here and earthy prototype, earthy, 1 Corinthians 15: 46 and a spiritual
The male of God has the seed and the female of God creates. Their is the Father the WORD and the Holy Spirit and these three are One. The Father bears the will after His own counsel, and the WORD bears the glory and life as does the of the Father, and the Holy Spirit brings into fruition the Word of God the Father and the WORD (the Son)
As the Father has life in Himself, He also has given to the Son to have life in Himself. The Spirit is to the Son as to the Father, bringing into fruition the spoken Word of God. Notice Hebrews 1: 3, Jesus who is the brightness of glory and the express image of god's person upholding all things, by the Word of His power. Colossians 1: 18 reveals that in Christ all fullness dwells, and that He has the preeminence, in that God the Father has given all things into His hands.
Don't get lost here with all the variations of scripture, each verse of scripture gives light, light to light, 2 Corinthians 4: 6 reveals that God has commanded that the Light of Christ shine in the hearts of men, and it is the Spirit who gives the knowledge (brings into fruition, manifest) the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
As we understand the necessity of Jesus (the WORD) we will also see the necessity of the Spirit. Both the WORD and the Spirit proceed from the Father and are God, 1 John 5: 7

There are many possible reasons. One is that He reated Adam in His image and from Adam he created a woman so that leads one to believe that he has the image of a male and not a female perhaps? He calls himself a Father and whatnot as well in the Bible.

========================
God the Father has no form or substance, angels have no form or substance, spirits have no form or substance, they are neither male or female, however, God the Father named his children Sons, as spirits are sons. Male /female is not a reality in heaven it is a thought a trait. (John 4:24, Matthew 22:30)
Jesus said, those who can not see a male as a female or a female as a male can not enter into heaven (Thomas 22).
Jesus said, Mary I will make you male in your next life, (Thomas 114).
Jesus said, a spirit can not enter into it's flesh body until after it (the flesh body) has been made male or female (garnished)(Luke 11:25).
It has been written, Jesus gave them the power to become sons of God, (John 1:12).
Jesus said, those children of the kingdom shall be cast out of the kingdom of heaven who have not become sons of God, (Matthew 8:12)

Remember Mary sister of Lazarus, for she anointed Jesus at the hour of His death. (Matthew 26:13, John 11:1-2, and Luke 10:38-42)

I am not a Christian or Jew; I do not follow the teachings of Peter, Paul or Moses, (Acts 11:26, Genesis 32:28)
I am a disciple of Jesus, (John 15:7-8); I follow only the teachings of Jesus. I not only read each and every word Jesus spoke, I do all the things Jesus Himself told me to do, (John 14:21-26)

The bible says that God created man in the image of himself ~ of course, he created woman too. God exists.

1. Because men have ego's that make them think they have to be powerful; and superior then women. For example KING of the universe FATHER God; what not queen or mother. Strength in the archaic times wasn't attributed to the feminine.
2. An imaginary creator can have whatever gender you attribute to it; it can even go through puberty.
3. See God in everything, and everybody, which only means to see yourself in everything. This is the key to unconditional love.

At the time when the bible was written males were the dominate gender (females were nothing) so if God was a female, do you think God would've been taken seriously?

We refer to God as Father to keep it simple. Yes God can be everything, nothing, and anything in between God chooses. The only true Matter.
Let's just say we are the ones who put labels and judgments on everything.

The Bible refers to Him as a male.
