This is a morbid question, but here goes....?

I have always wondered when someone passes away, and they are put into an obituary. Why do they never, ever tell how they died? I know some of you may say "out of privacy for the family". What does privacy have to do with anything? Please remember, I am not trying to be disrespectful, I have just always wondered that. When I die, I want it put into my obit exactly how I died.

*****BTW, I did not know what category to put this under so please don't say "wrong category" Thanks in advance.

I have thought the same thing. If I knew that 10 people died from smoking, maybe I would then not smoke.

In years past, it was considered disrespectful to discuss such things, in many cases. By never publishing details, the newspaper didn't make those without such details stand out. This protected families of those who suicided, died from STD's, or in other ways that were considered to shame the family.

That's why it is considered a matter of privacy.

It's just a respect thing. I don't think that people are supposed to focus on how or what the individual died from, but rather just to acknowledge the death of the person.

It a little more respectful for the deceased and there family. there,s really no need for details on how they died. Just that someone has passed away, To there family that's enough. Give them you condolences and leave it at that.

In some cultures that I am aware of, it is taboo.

    Perhaps that's why.
