Has anyone had any experience with 284 winchester?

I have been researching different rounds to build a gun around and I was reading up on the F-class 2008 National champion's gun which was a straight up 284 instead of a 6.5-284. The key factor I liked was the barrel life to accuracy of the cartridge stats. Any detractors to the 284. Looking for something with less recoil than a 30-06, 300 win mag, or 338. I am not going to build a 308.

I had a friend that used to have an old Winchester Model 88 lever-action rifle chambered for .284 Win. As I recall, he constantly missed deer with the thing.

The 284 Win is shoots a 7mm diameter bullet. My personal experience with 7mm cartridges has not be favorable. There's just something about that bullet diameter that just does not work (at least for me). The .308 diameter stuff is fantastic. But, no matter how hard I try, I just can't get the same accuracy out of the 7mm that I used to own (sold them off because they shot like shotguns).

I would much rather have a 308 Winchester chambered rifle over a 284 Winchester.

    I have a 1963 Winchester Model 100 in .284. It works well.

Considering the powder capacity to bore diameter ratio I would expect the barrel life to accuracy to fall between the 6.5-284 and 308.

Seeing as how few production rifles were built in 284 and none in the last several years except customs, the 284 is a dying cartridge. It's niche has been filled by the 7mm WSM. Be sure to stock up on enough brass to outlast the rifle.
