Why is 666 the number of the beast?
I've been hearing over the years that 666 is the number of the beast. I have a question. Why is it 666? And not like 555 or some other random combination like that? Is it a mathematical term or something?
Ha, wow some of those reasons behind the number are pretty nifty indeed. :)

Understanding a bit of the meaning behind the numbers themselves is what is necessary. The digit 6 represents man, falling short of the divine number 7, representing God. There are three of those digits (another divine number representing God). Thus, it is "man presenting himself as God" (the Anti-Christ).
Think about this for a minute. Look at all of these people saying it says "Nero" because of the Roman Numerals and the Wikipedia page on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast
Then take a look at these two links.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_numerals No XXLV here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament NT written in Greek
Suddenly, Wikipedia doesn't agree with itself, does it? The devil would love for you to be confused. You shouldn't be any longer.
What I do know is the Bible says that person will be in the new Temple and people will believe he is god. I don't capitalize God (or He) in that last sentence because he won't be God. Read the book of Daniel. It describes all of this.
I'm not going to say don't ask questions, but I want you to think about this - if I teach you all you need to know, how do you understand it completely? James chapter one says God gives understanding to those who ask for it. So ask for understanding. And study the Word. It truly is the best way.

That is the beast logo. And it has to do with the Egyptian OT occults.
But Revelation 14:14+ And deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles that he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, that had the wound by a sword & did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he caused all, both small & great, rich & poor, free & bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had that mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that has understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is 666 [Six hundred threescore & six].
The spirit of antichrist has been around for a long time. This is just his copy cat version of the seal on the 144,000 Israelites who are sealed by the LORDs Angels in their forehead.

Another reason might be attributed to what 666 stands for. 666 is the sum number of the Sun Square, which represents any number of solar gods(such as Lucifer, who was actually the Italian God of the Sun, or Light, before absorbed, and altered by the Catholic-Western- Church). This dates back some thousands of years, so it is plausible as one selection of the number. Another reason is that there are two numbers used to represent man, five and six. Six represents man's connection to the spirit. 6 would be physical, 66 spiritual, and 666 on a divine level. Basically saying the number of man in God.

The Christian scripture on which this is based is in Revelation, and the writer - apparently John - seems to be writing about the times in which he lived, and his prophecies would have been expected to have come about in the 1st or 2nd century BCE, which never happened. Some Christian sects seem to interpret the scripture as a prophecy for the future, and some have forecast when the events will happen, like the Millerites, and when it continued not to happen they merely push the prophecy further into the future. There are words used like The Rapture, and they interpret the Beast as Satan, or the Antichrist.
The Beast in Revelation likely referred to the Roman Emperor Nero.
In Hebrew, letters are also used as numbers; the figure 666 is reached by adding up the numerical values of the Hebrew letters "Qsr Nrwn", which transliterates the Greek "Kaisar Neron" ("Emperor Nero"):
Q = 100
S = 60
R = 200
N = 50
R = 200
W = 6
N = 50
Total:666
So it's a kind of code using magical numerology (Gematria), perhaps to conceal the real message from the Romans.
The "mark of the Beast" seems to be some sort of passport in the form of a tattoo for those who want to trade within the Roman Empire, or maybe some kind of proof that someone is part of the Empire and entitled to trade within it. Whether it is some kind of branding or something else may be debateable.

Numerology is a recurrent thematic metaphor in both Hebrew and Greek religious scriptural writings. The numeral 7 is used in biblical texts as a metaphor towards the completion of a religious ritual or activity. It is also used as a numerical expression of the divine nature of God The Father in scripture. Since biblical scripture refers to God as a trinity being, God The Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit, the numeral 777 is sometimes used. As an extension of this idea, the number 6 is used in scripture to describe the attributes of Mankind. Revelations teaches that The Beast with rule Mankind during the Great Tribulation. The seat of power of The Beast will be a parody of the trinity nature of the Godhead. Ergo, the numeral 666 is used to describe this perverted unholy trinity. The unholy trinity described in Revelations is described as The Beast / Antichrist, The False Prophet / Image, and The Unholy Spirit. Further information can be found within the works Clearance Larkin, who is the undisputed master of eschatarian theology.

Numbers are symbolic in the Bible. In particular the Book of Revelation. For instance 7 shows perfection. The number 6 shows mans imperfection. So, the number 666 magnifies that imperfection.

Lotta Lou said: And it has to do with the Egyptian OT occults
It's nothing to do with Egypt. It most likely has it's origins in Gemantria (Hebrew numerology), for which 666 is the numerological rendering of the name of Emperor Nero, who was regarded as a persecutor of early Christians. Thus it's association with the beast was a coded way of criticising Nero's regime, likely originally composed at a time when doing so openly would have been dangerous.

It is believed that the anti Christ will come out of the Revived roman empire. With roman numerals also being letters it is believed BY SOME that the name of this person will add up to 666.

2/3 = 0.666 ... to infinity of 'nothing'
is the number of the 'name' of a man
who does 2Corinthians 13:1&2 stuff
Let him who has understanding
count (compute) the number
of the name of this man's
religion is vain, because
he can't bridle his tongue
As for two beasts of Revelation 13,
let me tell you a Knock Knock Joke:
Knock Knock. Who's there? It's LAW <-- Law.
Vengeance is mine saith the LAW to the Law.

When I was a Seventh-Day Adventist, we learned that the Pope wears a ring with the words, "The Vicar of the Son of God", but in Latin, like this:
VICARIVS FILII DEI
You add up the Roman numerals:
D = 500
C = 100
L = 50
V = 5 (times 2 = 10)
I = 1 (times 6 = 6)
Nifty, eh?
