Is use of the word "gratuitous" a little gratuitous?

Is there ever a place where "gratuitous" is actually ever needed, or is it always gratuitously used?

It's only gratuitous use would come from someone who doesn't know what it means.

If it bothers you, use unwarranted instead. Works just as well, and doesn't sound gratuitous.
