How can I get my son to stop biting his finger?

My son is almost two years old and he keeps biting his index finger. It has become dry cracked and sometimes it bleeds. I have tried putting something bitter on it but it does not stop him. I am at a loss as to what to do.

Ok my daughter is 4 and she bites her thumb at the knuckle and blood doesn't seem to bother her. We do know that she has sensory Integration and is oral factory. I asked our pediatrican about the finger and he prescribed a Pacifier.(she was 2 and 1/2) I gave her a pacifier trusting the doctor. He said it was a soothing issue and that she out grow the pacifier or we can later take it. Also the fingers go everywhere you go. So you never have to learn to self soothe.

I found she likes to bite more than suck, so i got her a teether by playtex that looks like paciferie and pacfierie for older children with teeth. Her dentist likes the objects i chose also as they are both orthodonticic correct devices. Hope this works for you.

Also you may want to look into Sensory processing disorder. If he has this problem there is so much you can do to help him become comfortable in uncomfortable skin
